Welding Jobs And Low Pay: (And 3 Things Can You Do About It Now)

The average age of a welder is now 56 years old.

Young people don’t become welders because school welding shops have been replaced by computer labs (which is crazy because welding is the glue that holds our world together).

Meanwhile, for a number of reasons, America is embarking on a real and sustained boom – a boom that will last 20 years – a boom that will scream (and pay big bucks) for welders. Why is there a boom? What can you do to make $100 an hour? Why are welding wages still so low? Get the answer here.

What are the benefits of welding?

Soldering is one of the few crafts or trade crafts that is available in a long list of other trade crafts and places that would not normally be thought of. Example: I started welding at 13, repairing motorcycles and cars.

At 19, I was building the gate (40 years later, the gate is still there, and it is beautiful). I became an industrial electrician and welded as an electrician. Artists use welding.

Injection molds used to make plastic parts are repaired by welders. Stainless steel pipes in food grade plants are installed and repaired by welders. There are also welders who make these and other specialties in the welding industry and make $100 an hour…

Why the outlook for welders is better than ever

A boom is underway. It was the oil and gas boom – so much oil was extracted through new technologies that the US was once again the world’s number one producer.

Manufacturing is coming back to America.

3D printers and other new technologies and labor costs in China: it is permanently driving manufacturing back home. By 2020, Chinese workers will earn $6.43 an hour.

China Manufacturing costs will soon exceed those in the US.

Few people understand that American workers are 3 times as productive as Chinese workers. Add in the cost of shipping to the US, and it’s easy to see why the US will add 2,000,000 (two million) manufacturing jobs by 2020.

What are three things you can do to ensure you are a well-paid welder?

Action 1 for high-paid welders:

Begin or level up your welding career by mastering the hardest and oldest welding process first. Stick or SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding) is about 100 years old and is the most difficult process to master. It was successful during WW2 as it worked for shipbuilding – it allowed Kaiser Steel to build a new ship every 3 days – no wonder the Germans lost!

In some circles, stick welding is considered a dinosaur. Don’t listen to that! It’s easy to set up and very portable. It’s as durable as it is simple. It can be used in Breeze – most other processes cannot. It can solder almost anything. You will have more chances to make more money.

Action 2 for high-paid welders:

Spot the welded pipe with a stick. Pipe welders are the kings of welding. They make the most money — and they do the least work. Don’t get me wrong, pipe welders work hard. However, a good pipe welder does not prepare the pipe. They don’t grind. Skill is so valuable, they often sit in the truck until the next joint is ready. They couldn’t risk injury by doing anything other than welding the pipes.

High-paid welder action three:

Get your own rig. Welder is a truck with welders on it. A good rig includes all support tools, cable reels, and more. A welder with a drill is a drill welder. A rig welder will make more money because the company will rent your rig and hire you at the same time. Rig welders typically earn $65 to $150 an hour.

Becoming a rig welder is also a flexible move.

Think about it – welders without a rig (welders without a rig are called “one-handed welders”) are also acceptable for one-handed work – if the job is structured like this, they just park the rig and weld with the company welder. However, when a company needs to rent a rig, a rig welder is the best solution – a welder who owns a rig can fit the bill. The reverse is not true (obviously). A one-handed welder without a rig cannot work as a rig welder.

Another advantage of being a rig welder?

Managing rigs (maintenance, repair and maintenance) brings any welder into the world of “You Inc” – thinking about welding logistically and strategically – almost like a business. Why is business administration good for you?

A welder who can manage his or her own (along with a worker or two and the welder’s assistant) can take out a contract at any federal facility, such as a military base. No contractor license is required. It’s not uncommon for contract welders to make $1,000 a day.

Why are so many welders paid so little?

Many welders experience low wages associated with MIG welding. MIG is often used in factory situations (for example) where trailers or lifts are manufactured, or custom engineered trucks. Why Are MIG Welders Wages So Low?

Here’s why: If you walk into a shop and apply for a job and interview well – and they have openings for welders – they can probably train you to be a MIG welder in a day.

Usually, any skill that can be learned in a day doesn’t pay off well.

Having said that, I don’t want to run out of MIG or MIG welders in this article. MIG is a great process. The low end of the MIG pay scale involves welders doing the same simple, non-critical welds over and over again (you can see why the pay is low).

in conclusion:

After a day of factory training, a certified structural MIG welder is more valuable than a welder. Sadly, even skilled and certified MIG welders don’t make a lot of money. Mastering the art of welded pipe welding is a must — with this skill, welders can earn from $74,346 to $200,000 or more per year.
