Why We Can’t Get Enough American Idol

Now we’re in the top 12 finals. American Idol was in full swing in 2006, and as Randy Jackson said, “We’ve got a hot one, dog.”

When my wife and I sit down to watch it every night, we can’t help being hooked. Even my 3 and 4.5 year olds enjoyed what they called a “singing show”. Among all these interests, I don’t understand why?

Every year, it’s the same format, the same judges, the same Ryan Seacrest. The banter between Seacrest and Simon Cowell was predictable. We see it a mile away. Paula Abdul is always tender, commenting on the sex appeal of a man like Ace Young, making us wonder who’s telling the truth – she or Cory Clark. Randy Jackson says “it’s awesome” or “there are a few parts that suck.” Or he yells at “dog pound” and demands their guffales, chortels and coodles. I’m not really sure what Jackson is talking about – next year I want a Jackson Speech Decoder key. Cowell, well, he’s always honest, sometimes brutal, and uses the word “appalling” a lot.

I still ask myself why I – and everyone in most of the American population – love this show that takes singers with guts, ambition, a little flair and some stage presence and turns them into international pop icons ?

Well, I’ve been thinking about it for a long time. I think it comes down to one thing. Empathy: We all see a little bit of ourselves or who we want or think we could or might like to be in one or the other contestant. It gave us a chance to share their dreams of being the next American Idol – the next pop icon.

On several levels.

Diversity number one, having an icon that we can all relate to. We have Ace Young, young and probably too beautiful to be taken seriously as a talented singer, probably better as a 25 year old actor. He had to paint young and middle-aged women. My wife also said: I look good. Can’t offer contradictory views because of course I could be wrong, all I can say is “you know what, you’re right”.

Next let’s look at Mandisa. Yes, she is big, but this girl can sing. Reminiscent of Aretha Franklin, she has a beautiful smile. We can’t help being drawn to her.

And Bucky Covington. He had this gruff, kind of Southern, kind of Texas swagger. There are no other blond long-haired men in cowboy hats, so yes, he represents some demographics.

Katharine McPhee has a beautiful voice and a smile, and is very composed; her talent is obvious. Theater fans adored her.

Paris Bennett has so many looks that I doubt it’s really the same person. She can really act. I used to really think she was cute, but now I think she’s brave and excited to win this contest.

Taylor Hicks’ dance moves are… well, I’m not sure what they are. He’s like Joe Cocker or Bob Seger who drank too much caffeine. He’s a bit of a freak, but very likable and attractive.

Elliot Yamin is very close to his mother. This guy fights diabetes by wearing an insulin pump every day. I’m not really a fan, but my heart bleeds for him; no matter how well he sings, I have to respect his dexterity. How about Kelly Pickler? How did Simon call her, “Naughty little lunatic?” she replied, asking what it was. Come on guys 16-40 want to explain to her in detail. The cute, furry, blonde little thing caught the attention of the young dad. Oh, what do you ask, “Can she sing??” Really, does it matter?

We have rock singers, initially represented by Chris Daughtry. Of course, Simon wasn’t happy with Chris’s performance this week. But this guy is hot, and he messes up the bald thing. He’s not exactly classy, but he’s classy — and he’s rockin’.

Icons provide validation and relevance to all of us. The show hosts pop music icons each week. Last year, we had Elton John. Last week, Shakira and Wyclef Jean of Modern Times. Earlier this year, we started with Stevie Wonder, then Barry Manilow. Love or hate any of them, they are truly legendary, truly influencing R&B, pop, soul and now offering samples and hooks for jamming on our iPod today. Hearing their songs takes us back to the era when we first heard them – the 70s, 80s and 90s. They create nostalgia for bygone days and eras and bring us back to the excitement of another era.

American Idol allows us to transfer ourselves into the contestants’ experiences. When they hear “You’re not in the bottom three”, we can appreciate their joy at being on top of the world. Unfortunately, we were as disappointed as Seacrest when they said “this is the end of your road”.

We relate to them, their accents, races, styles, smiles, personalities and talents. There’s a moment in every song where we shift ourselves to being on stage with them, sharing that spotlight. For a few seconds, through this diversion, we were American Idol, the next pop icon. All the stress of fear and the pain of everyday life are gone and everything is fine in our world.

This, my friends, is the secret to American Idol’s success. It offers each of us an opportunity to escape our everyday lives and become a star. Americans cannot resist the chance to be a star, an American icon, if only for a moment.

At the end of a long day, there’s nothing wrong with that.
