Cassie’s Law – Does Your Eyesight Affect Your Ability to Drive?

Does your vision affect your ability to drive?

Two years ago, 16-year-old Cassie McCord died after being hit by an 87-year-old man who had been told by police three days earlier that he was medically unfit to drive. Casey’s death sparked a campaign by Casey’s family to urge the government to revise the process currently involving the suspension of a driver’s license.

The incident came three days after an 86-year-old man attempted to drive his car into the exit of the gas station, prompting local police to launch an investigation. The 86-year-old failed a police vision test and was told he was medically unfit to drive and his license would be suspended within days. However, that didn’t stop the 86-year-old from continuing to drive, which unfortunately resulted in the death of the 16-year-old schoolgirl three days later.

The current process involves police requesting the license to be revoked by post. Unfortunately, the DVLA did not receive the request in time for the 86-year-old’s license to be legally revoked. Currently, the police do not have the legal power to revoke a driver’s license.

Cassie’s family collected more than 45,000 signatures, which have been turned over to the Department of Transportation for an urgent review of existing laws. The new program, called Calcifer, allows police to email requests to the DVLA, enabling them to revoke driver’s licenses within hours.

Cassie’s mother, Mrs McCord, from Colchester, said: “I believe it is a very good solution. The fact that the Department of Transport has listened to someone who has no power like me is astonishing. Next week it will be It’s been two years since Cassie passed away. “The timing couldn’t have been better”.

Drivers who continue to drive after being told their license has been suspended face a fine of up to £5,000 or a possible six-month jail sentence.

A spokesman for the Department of Transport said: “Our sympathies are with Mrs McCord and we appreciate her valuable work in raising awareness of this issue. The DVLA worked closely with the police to greatly simplify the process of revoking a license. When a driver has poor eyesight. The decision on whether to suspend a driver’s license on medical grounds remains with the DVLA, although the electronic process to notify drivers that their license has been suspended has now been expedited.”
