Carp Love French Fries?

Every fall, usually the last week of September, my son, brother, me and a friend take a 3 hour trip to McConnellsville, Ohio. This is a fall fishing trip and usually we stay for about three days. We fish in an area owned by AEP (American Electric Power Company) which is open to the public; all that is required is a permit which you can print off from their website. The AEP has about 300 fishing lakes, some as small as they are over a mile long. But this isn’t a story about fishing in the AEP area, it’s a story about Muskingan River carp and catfish.

Each day we would walk around the AEP area and return in the evening to our hotel, the Three Sisters Inn on NW 60. That’s the beauty of our trip; we fished bass all day, then came back to the hotel around 4:00pm to clean up and get something to eat. Due to the time it takes to get back to the lake and the fact that the hotel is across the road from the Muskingum River and the hotel has its own jetty, we had to try fishing from the river. We usually never fish carp, but we thought “hey why not”. I’m not traveling this time to sit in a hotel room and watch TV, I can watch TV at home.

This is where it gets interesting, but I need to give you the layout of that area. The hotel is on the main driveway and next to the hotel is a small restaurant; no big chains, just a small town restaurant, but the food is really good. Not far from the restaurant is a McDonald’s restaurant. I know you’re talking to yourself what does this have to do with fishing carp and catfish; wait a minute, I’ll tie them all together.

Ok, this is when I decided to cross the street and try my hand at carp and catfish fishing. Others in my group were less enthusiastic about carp or cat fishing. You could tell they’re a little picky about anything other than bass fishing. I was looking over my gear and selected the heaviest rod and line I had with me. I made a Kentucky rig with a hook. But this part of the story is a little hard to believe. As I was packing my fishing gear, a sister at the Three Sisters Inn told me the best bait was to use McDonald’s french fries; yes, you read that right, McDonald’s french fries. So, having never fished carp before, I took any advice I could get. So I walked over to the restaurant and bought my bait; by the way, this was the first time I could eat bait.

So I headed to the pier with my french fries, fishing rod and reel, ready to try my luck. Around the time I was about to cast, other people, getting bored, came to see me fishing and made fun of my bait. Well, within a few minutes I was pulling in a 5lb carp and it took my life, clear water like a bass a few times. I rehooked the hook with my special bait and shortly after I caught another fish, but this time it was a catfish. Well, it didn’t take long before the pier let out four lines with special baits and we were all fishing. My younger brother who never fished carp became a real carp fan in a very short time and caught more fish than the rest of us. We had a good idea to try the french fries served at the diner I mentioned; but couldn’t take a bite. Fish know what they like, and closing doesn’t count.

The moral of the story is that old dogs can learn new tricks that we do.
