Facebook Games – Hotel City

After being released to the public just last week, Hotel City appears to be a descendant 2D simulator from Playfish, the same developers that brought you the famous Restaurant City and Pet Society.

At first glance, Hotel City is a simulator similar to the old Sim Tower, mixed with a twist of Restaurant City. For a few days now, I’ve been watching ads while playing Restaurant City, wondering what the hell is Hotel City? What new entertainment can it bring me? So without even thinking about it, I decided to give it a shot and click on the ad to find out about myself.

play games

When I first launched the app in my Facebook account, the game loaded fairly smoothly, with no hiccups or long load times (thankfully, Playfish fixed the load times in their games). Once loaded, I started naming my hotel (Mabel High) and right after that, the in-game tutorial began. The game tutorial is very simple and clear, people of any age can easily get started. Instruct new players on what to do and how the game interface works.

Hotel City works in a 2D side scrolling environment, allowing you to move freely on the screen to get a better understanding of your hotel through interfaces carefully placed around the screen. Game settings, building menus, and status bars are all located on the edge of the screen for easy access without blocking the hotel environment. However, what impresses me most is the beta version, Playfish has added various types of furniture and rooms that can be used in the game.

After getting acquainted with my new surroundings, I started the next step of creating my new hotel. As a newly established hotel, the game arranges for you 3 temporary employees, a lobby area and enough gold coins to build a cozy hotel, which includes 3 small rooms, a cleaning closet and some extra decorations. Not a big deal when you’re just starting a new establishment, but enough to attract a small crowd.

Of course, no good hotel is complete without the staff running around entertaining and serving guests. The new employees at the start of the game are nameless avatars with red tags calling themselves “Temporary Employees”. Unlike previous Playfish emulators, you can’t just hire any friend from your list to replace them, which is disappointing. Having to actually send out an ad to recruit your friend as a permanent employee of the new hotel. This can be troublesome at first, as not many people play the game, and most will ignore your calls for help. However, if you do manage to get your friend to work at your new hotel, the reward will be worth it as the cost per shift will be significantly lower.

Some elements of the game don’t seem to have changed much, as my employees still need a “break” after a long day at work. While you don’t have to monitor your workers’ progress all the time, you’ll still need to log in for a day or two before starting your next shift. Currently, work shifts are presented in 4 different settings. The shortest shift is 2 hours, the longest currently offered is around 48 hours, depending on your budget.

A definite improvement over previous Playfish games is the friends list. On the bottom panel, you’ll see that your friends list now has a gold indicator indicating that rewards can be claimed if you visit them. Gone are the days of just wondering who you didn’t visit today and you missed out on loot.

In the end, the only thing I can’t do in the game right now is sell all my old furniture or send it to my friends in need, as there isn’t a feature for that at this stage of development. So, there’s nothing I can do now but dump all that old crap in my garage while I wait for Playfish to enable the feature.

graphics

There’s really not much to say about the game’s graphics, as it looks average and leaves a lot of room for improvement. There’s a small 3D element to the game, but it’s hard to notice unless you look very, very closely at the little avatar’s head. Yes, those hard-working little avatars are actually 3D, but nothing wowed me. Seriously, I was actually expected to be more than a 3D bobblehead.

sound

Music and voice could do with some work. While it starts out great, the music can become quite annoying after 10 minutes of continuous listening. The same goes for the sound, as people make all kinds of sleeping and yawning noises, which is annoying. As usual, it is recommended to turn off the sound, unless you like to listen to the same old stuff over and over again.

in conclusion

Currently, the game looks promising for a BETA release. However, there is still much room for improvement. While it’s not something other developers haven’t done over the years, for killing time at the office or school, this game will probably only occupy a few minutes of your time. As for me, I will pay attention to this game from time to time, and I only hope that more content will be added when the game is launched.
