Where to Stay in San Juan, Puerto Rico
Many tourists to Puerto Rico never venture beyond the capital, San Juan. Although they could be forgiven for missing out on the spectacular natural beauty and quiet towns found elsewhere on the island. San Juan has more than enough sights and activities to keep anyone entertained.
The question is, where should I live in this city? The answer depends on where your interests lie.
If you’re coming for the beach (and beach party), you’ll definitely need to book a room at Hotel Row, the string of gorgeous beach resorts that stretch from the airport to the bridge that connects the mainland to Old San Juan Island.
If you want to try your hand at the gaming tables, the beach strip is also where you want to be, as this is where the main casinos are located. Condado is the busiest neighborhood along the line, but Isla Verde and Ocean Park are also home to exciting vacation spots.
If historical sights are more your thing, you should try and book a room in Old San Juan itself. The Old Town has some great hotels that are historical gems in their own right, brimming with charm and an old world vibe.
If you can’t find the right place in Old Town due to budget constraints or the fact that everything is fully booked, the Miramar neighborhood is a great option.
While not on the beach, Miramar is about as close to Old San Juan as you can get without being in Old Town. On average, hotels here are cheaper than those on the beach strip or the old town. From Miramar, you can take a convenient bus to the historic district for 75 cents.
No matter where you decide to stay in San Juan, you’ll enjoy your stay more if you try to speak some Spanish with the taxi drivers, hotel staff, and restaurant staff you encounter. While most locals working in the service industry are fluent in English, making an effort to communicate with them in Spanish will make you a gracious guest.
