Collecting Antique Halloween Candy Containers
Candy and sweets are some of the most collected Halloween items when kids go door-to-door trick-or-treating. Candy is not a durable item that could be a utilitarian collectible. However, the containers that kids use to collect candy during trick-or-treating are highly prized collectibles.
In the early 1900’s, Halloween candy containers were produced in Japan and Germany. During this same period, trick-or-treating in the United States spread from the Northeast (where the majority of British immigrants lived) to other parts of the country. Kids need containers to collect their desserts and candies. Candy containers imported from Japan and Germany filled this need.

The top of the container usually includes a hat or figure’s head. When this top is open, candies can be placed on the bottom and it remains protected when the top is replaced. Candy containers range in size from 2 inches to over 12 inches.
Candy container from Japan
By the 1930s, Japan was a major contributor to imports of candy containers to the United States. Containers produced in Japan are made of bisque, celluloid and glass. Some containers are filled with candy, others need to be filled with homemade goodies. Before 1930, containers from Japan were only marked Japanese or German. After 1930, new laws passed in the United States required imported goods to be marked “Made in” followed by the name of the country.

Into the 1940s and continuing into the 1950s, a small number of commercially released trick-or-treat bags were produced. Bags printed with Halloween-related business messages are often used to collect Halloween candy and then discarded. The low frequency with which these bags survive makes them highly collectible.
Continuing into the 1960s, hard plastic containers were produced in the United States. These containers are usually available in bright orange and black. Most are made in the form of pumpkins, although containers in the form of cats and witches have been found.
decide what to collect
Candy containers from Germany are the most precious and also the most expensive. As German containers became harder to find and more affordable, collectors turned to Japanese-made containers. The most plentiful and affordable containers are plastic containers in the US. Plastic containers can be found at flea markets and yard sales and are inexpensive. Non-collectors of Halloween items don’t see the potential value in these hard plastic containers.
Identify replicas
German and Japanese candy containers have been copied over the past 20 years. Many replicas come from China. At first glance, to an inexperienced collector, a reproduction may be difficult to distinguish from an earlier authentic container. Characteristics that distinguish an original from a reproduction include paint colors that appear brighter than the original, paint worn in unexpected or unusual places. Expect the original container to show some wear and tear on the top, handle, bottom, etc. Finally, if the price is too good to be true, it’s likely a replica. When considering any antique purchase, it’s best to do some research and, if possible, visit a place or dealer that has an actual collectible. Most collectors are happy to share information.
