The True Story Behind the Film – ‘The Exorcist’

Most people have either read the book (1971) or seen the movie (1973) “The Exorcist,” in which a young girl named Regan MacNeil is believed to be possessed by a demon. In reality, however, the movie is based on real-life events of a boy named Roland Doe.

This story became the inspiration for what could be one of the most beloved horror movies of all time.

Author William Peter Blatty discovers what Jesuit priests did during and after the Rev. William S. Bowdern’s repeated attempts to exorcise 13-year-old Roland Doe After writing The Exorcist Diary, I was inspired to write this book.

William Blatty was an English major at Georgetown University in 1949 when he began reading newspaper articles about Roland Doe’s exorcisms. He then approached his lecturer, the Reverend Thomas Birmingham, and told him the story. The priest then proceeded to investigate further and discovered that Roland Doe’s diary had actually been recorded by a Jesuit priest.

Unfortunately, Blatty was unable to obtain permission to read the diary, so he had to resort to a lengthy newspaper investigation, which led to some startling discoveries:

In January 1949, a young boy named Roland Doe and his dysfunctional family began experiencing strange occurrences in their home. For various reasons, the location is still undetermined. One of them is:

Years later, when Father Bowden was asked by Blatty during the production of the film if he should visit the Doeys, the father insisted on keeping the family’s location and confidentiality a secret to protect the boys. However, I can disclose that it is either Maryland, USA, or Mount Rainer, USA.

Regardless of the true location, the family’s troubles were known to start with minor disturbances, scratching noises heard at various points in their home (usually from the ceiling or walls). This led the family to suspect a rat infestation. However, after contacting a rodent control company that did a full investigation, it was determined that the home was free of pests.

Before long, the causes of these devastations start to become more dramatic and sinister.

Roland Doe will be the unfortunate victim of this ruthless phenomenon.

While sleeping, he began to experience violent bed shaking, with sheets being dragged out of bed. These attacks escalate in intensity rapidly and can often be heard and seen by family members.

When Roland’s family became convinced that the attacks were real, they also began to link Roland’s obsession to the Ouija board. Roland became involved in the “game” thanks to his Aunt Tilly, who introduced him to the game before she died on January 26, 1949 (11 days before the paranormal event began).

Although Roland’s mother suspects that Aunt Tilly is to blame for the haunting, the family is forced to act quickly as concerns for Roland’s safety mount.

Since Rowland was baptized Lutheran after birth, the family called in the help of two Lutheran priests—one of them the Rev. Luther Schultz. They were accompanied by a rabbi, it is believed that the rabbi only had knowledge of such dubious phenomena.

As the young boy was being assessed by the rabbi, Roland is said to have suddenly started growling in a language he hadn’t known before.

The two Lutheran pastors couldn’t understand what Roland was saying, but the rabbi understood every word… Roland spoke Hebrew, the rabbi’s mother tongue – fluently!

DOE Contacts Dead ‘Aunt Tilly’

After researching some of the conflicting articles about Roland Doe’s exorcisms and studying the diaries of a Jesuit priest, I can now give you, based on my knowledge, the facts about what led to the exorcism and the actual exorcism.

I first saw various analogies before I realized that Roland’s mother held many Ouija board seances in order to contact Aunt Tilly, but I found that this was not the case:

Roland Doe’s mother “suspects” that recently departed Aunt Tillie is the cause of Roland’s relentless torture. In an episode where Roland is terrorized by this unknown force, his mother yells, “If that’s you Tilly, knock three times”.

Suddenly, a gust of cold wind hit, and the icy breath surrounded Roland’s mother, grandmother, and Roland himself. Then there were three distinct knocks on the floor, heard by all three of them.

Mrs. Doe asked hesitantly, “If that’s really you, Tillie, please knock four times”. Again, all three heard four floor slammings…but most disturbingly – claw marks were later found on Roland’s mattress.

However, Aunt Tilly is excluded after the paranormal creeps into Roland’s school. Roland was stunned when his desk began to move by itself in full view of the terrified teachers and schoolchildren. This later resulted in Roland being expelled from the school.

Understandably, the Doe family was traumatized and worried about Roland’s health as this increased. Reverend Schultz was brought in to observe the attack on Roland. Over the course of several nights, Shultze witnessed the boy appear to be in pain as he slept – putting his arms around him and tearing his sheets. However, the priest still did not believe in paranormal activity and referred Rowland to the University of Maryland Mental Health Clinic for testing. The test results came out… Roland was normal.

Still skeptical of the paranormal, Schultz asked Roland to spend the night at his vicarage. Schultz’s main purpose is to find out whether the haunting is Roland’s home, or Roland himself.

On February 17, 1949, Roland was taken overnight to Schultz’s home, where he was kept under surveillance. The pastor will not be disappointed.

That night, the pastor said there was a distinct scratching sound coming from Roland’s room. Shultze then went into the bedroom, horrified to see Roland flipped out of the armchair he was sitting in, the bed shaking beside him.

Schultz would later watch the scratches appear on Roland before his own eyes. The pastor realized that time was running out and suggested that the Doe family contact Catholics.

Roland’s parents are desperate now. They decided to take Roland to see Father Albert Hughes at St. James Catholic Church in Mount Rainier.

Meanwhile, a very concerned cousin of Rowland’s, a student at Saint Louis University of Father Raymond J. Bishop, confides in him about a paranormal occurrence at Doe’s house. After concluding that he was sure she was telling the truth, he decided to discuss the matter with his old friend, the Rev. William S. Bowden.

Father Bowden later became the main instigator of the exorcism of Roland Doe.

The Exorcism of Roland Doe

It is now clear to Roland Doe’s family that evil has taken hold of their 13-year-old son after he conducted numerous Ouija board meetings. Their only option was to visit Father Albert Hughes at St. James Catholic Church in Mount Rainier for an evaluation.

Father Hughes was initially unconvinced and hesitant about the case. However, he agreed to an interview…encountering what may be one of the most incredible and bizarre possession cases in the world to date.

interview

According to reports; when Father Hughes began interviewing Roland, the icy breath the Doe family felt when they “supposedly” made contact with Aunt Tilly was once again hostile.

Father Hughes was still skeptical and continued the interview, and Roland quickly scolded the priest. Hughes was obviously stunned, but remained noncommittal. However, this is quickly dispelled when Roland suddenly begins to speak Latin fluently. A language he never learned.

By the end of the interview, Father Hughes apparently had no doubts that Roland Doe was indeed possessed, and he immediately contacted his archbishop, Cardinal O’Boyle, to ask his permission to perform the exorcism. This was approved after the cardinal studied the case and medical evidence.

exorcism

Roland Doe’s first exorcism was performed at Georgetown Hospital. Before the ceremony, Roland was firmly tied to the bed, which is a normal practice.

As the exorcism ceremony began, Roland spat wildly at Father Hughes. The force of the downpour was reported to be so powerful and the target so incredible it was described as “beyond nature”.

The exorcism ended in horrific fashion when the young boy started yelling obscenities at his father and breaking free from his restraints. Roland then displayed a strength far beyond his age and conditioning—ripping a metal spring from the bed, severing the priest’s left arm—resulting in more than 100 stitches for Hughes.

After Father Hughes left the room, Roland immediately calmed down—there was no mention of the exorcism at all; it was as if all memories had disappeared into a vague void.

Roland was deemed not to need hospitalization after the exorcism and was sent home. Meanwhile, Father Hughes, unable to comprehend the reality he has just witnessed, has a nervous breakdown.

However, the case is far from closed. Something needs to be done to help Roland. After talking with his cousin and her professor, Father Bishop of Saint Louis University (mentioned at the end of part two), it was decided that he and his good friend Father Bowden would visit Roland.

On March 9, 1949, Fathers Bishop and Bowdern, along with a young Jesuit priest, Fr. Walter Halloran, went to the Rowland home. During the visit, they were horrified to find that Roland’s body had been disfigured, bleeding profusely from the scratch on his chest. Other phenomena were also witnessed, leading to Cardinal Ritter being petitioned by priests to perform another exorcism.

On March 16, 1949, Cardinal Ritter authorized the exorcism…shortly after, the priests began the exorcism.

The exorcism had a sinister atmosphere from the start, with reports of violent bed movements, extremely hostile language and profuse spitting from Roland. When more bloody scratches clearly spelled out the words “hell” and “devil,” it was decided to perform an exorcism in the psychiatric ward of Alexander Brothers Hospital for everyone’s safety.

In the hospital, Father Bowden began the exorcism by reciting prayers from the “Roman Rite”. Meanwhile, Father Bishop kept a diary.

As the prayer proceeded, Roland screamed in obvious pain. At one point, Bowdern is visibly shocked when the boy spits out: “I’m in hell – I see you – you’re in hell – it’s 1957.”

Roland started spitting at the priests again. Fr. Hallorann has reportedly said that Roland is an absolute shooter when he spits, saying that Roland will spit in your face even with his eyes closed.

The exorcism goes on for several nights, with each episode scarier than the last. Once Roland flew into a fit of rage and hit Halloran so hard that he broke his nose.

Bowden began reciting the Roman rite of Christian exorcism over and over again:

“I cast you out, you unclean soul, with the tiniest encroachment of your evil enemies and every ghost and legion of demons. Depart and be lost from this creation of God, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

After hours of reciting, Baldurn and the others panicked when Roland sat up straight and announced in a booming voice that he was “the angel Michael” and asked the demon to leave Roland.

Roland twisted and twisted his body until he finally lay still. He then sat up and announced in his normal voice to all the relieved witnesses that he had just had a vision of Saint Michael holding a flaming sword. The exorcism was successful!

Twelve days after the exorcism, the Roland family moved from St. Louis to Maryland. Rowland later wrote to Father Bowden, telling him he had settled down and had fresh memories of what had happened to him.

Roland Doe’s last report was about a happily married man with three children who still lives in Maryland.

The Catholic Church has a file on file stating that the Roland Doe property is “authentic,” with the signatures of forty-one witnesses to the incident.
