South Lake Tahoe – A Full Day Of Activities

We’re Yosemite-centric, like our Charlotte hotel in Groveland, CA, and we often offer itineraries that cover the areas travelers tend to visit when leaving or traveling to Groveland. and itinerary. We’ve found Lake Tahoe to be one of the destinations many of our guests come from or go to. We’ve traveled to Tahoe from all Sierra Nevada intersections, including Hwy 80, 50, 88 and 89, 4, 108, 120, then Hwy 395 north, and offer our favorite stops along the way.

Our last trip was a 2 night stay in South Lake Tahoe. For our route there, we went 49 to 50 into South Lake Tahoe. This took us 4 hours. On our return trip, we took Hwy 89 from South Lake Tahoe and Hwy 88 into Jackson, passing Kirkwood Ski Area and several scenic alpine lakes. We headed south on the 49 from Jackson. The route is only 3 hours and 15 minutes, and it’s scenic, with far fewer towns and traffic. Each of these routes is open year-round and is plowed throughout the snow season. Alternative summer routes include Hwy 4, which has some wonderful stops, including Murphys (a wine tasting town), Calaveras Big Tree State Park, and Hwy 89 from Alpine Lake to near Markleevile A scenic byway section of the freeway that winds around the hills (slow and often narrow route, but great for photography.) Another option through the Sierras is Route 108, which rivals Yosemite’s Tioga Pass for stunning views. Incredible scenery.

Once in South Lake Tahoe, we usually choose to stay at the smallest and friendliest casino hotel, the Lakeside Lodge (not actually on the lake!), for easy access to town, with fair room rates, great menu selection and a small, cozy casino. We also recommend staying at the Zephyr Cove Resort, which is also on the Nevada side for a variety of activities. From Zephyr Cove you can go horseback riding, rent speedboats, canoes, kayaks and sailboats. In winter, there is plenty of snow activity from here.

Driving around the lake is a must! Depending on how many stops you make, this scenic loop takes at least 2 hours and is approximately 95 miles. We tend to drive counterclockwise, although clockwise will get you on the coastal side of the highway, stopping at every point of interest, all the little parks to take pictures, play in the water and talk to the fishermen about their success; every enclave is unique.

One of our favorite stops has always been Ponderosa Ranch. This has been a fantastic memory jogger for Bonanza fans. Sadly, the ranch was sold and is now closed to the public. There are several old craftsmen on the ranch, from blacksmiths to glassblowers. The crowd-pleaser includes a lasso who uses his artistry to captivate audiences.

Bike rentals are available in Tahoe City and several other locations along the west coast. Riding trails border lakes and roads. Be aware of traffic as the trail crosses the highway at several points. This is a beautiful line of paved bike paths that is popular with families and sport riders alike.

Before heading back to South Lake Tahoe is Emerald Bay, where you can see the castle and island-top teahouse. Both remote and lonely places, but amazing that they even exist.

After returning to South Lake Tahoe, take the cable car to the top of Heaven Mountain. For those who aren’t afraid of heights, it can be a little uncomfortable and have that horrible feeling of falling, but with no ground underfoot, it’s worth the few minutes. Victor enjoyed my reaction when he tried to shake our climbing cocoon. Dozens of hiking trails start from the summit and follow the pistes. Just be careful to get back to the cable car before it closes, otherwise it’s a long walk!

Consider the smooth sailing of the paddle steamer MS Dixie II from Zephyr Cove. On our trip we opted for dinner service and while the meal was fair we met some pleasant travelers at the table, if we did it again we would just do the sightseeing tour and skip the meal, save £20More USD per person for a delicious dinner on land after disembarkation! The cruise will take you across the lake to Emerald Bay, where we revisit scenes from earlier in the day from a new vantage point. The bay is known as one of the most photographed spots in the world; a title well deserved!

Additional activities for extended stays include hot air balloon rides over the lake, white water rafting on the Truckee River, horseback riding, side trips to Virginia City or Reno, NV and more! Find valuable coupons at strategic hotel locations throughout the region.

For more photos and ideas for things to do in the Tahoe area, visit http://www.HotelCharlotte.com for additional sites, links and photos along the way.

Options for the winding return route from Tahoe to Groveland include cutting east onto 395 and heading south, where you might spend time visiting Eastern Sierras, a true ghost town Bodie along the route.
