The 3 Faces of Barbados, Part 3 – The Undeveloped, Pristine Beauty of the East Coast

Palm trees and wildflowers – luckily, nothing else – grace Barbados’ rugged eastern (and northern) coastline. Barbados’ east coast looks much the same as it did 100 years ago, save for a few private homes and modest commercial buildings.

Why is such a utopia still undeveloped? Not because the rulers of Barbados protected the rugged beauty of the coastline, but because the Atlantic Ocean did.

What beauty awaits you! Over time, rough seas eroded the huge rocks on the coastline into beautiful giant stone sculptures. But the rough seas off the east coast of Barbados show no mercy to anyone foolish enough to get in.

However, one guy does come in: a world-class surfer. Bathsheba’s “soup bowl” has captivated surfers from all over the world.

We mere mortals are content with calm pools in very warm seawater pools where we hunt for tiny sea creatures and use them as nature’s hot tubs.

I swear the wind on the east coast of Barbados is tranquillizing; when I lay over for the weekend, I’ll hike, sit in a pool of warm saltwater, marvel at the wonders of life – and then retreat to my modest hotel room to sleep. Then sleep a little longer. When I visit the East Coast, I can take two naps during the day and still work eight hours at night.

Where to stay on the East Coast of Barbados:

Which brings us to where we live. Surfers often rent beachfront private homes that have seen better days. If not on a more generous budget, discerning travelers can check into one of these unpretentious hotels:

* round house: Nestled in one of the prettiest locations anywhere on Earth – Bathsheba, Barbados – this old house has been converted into a popular restaurant of the same name, with several rooms to rent upstairs.

The rooms are basic but spotless and comfortable. Lounge on your balcony overlooking nature’s exquisite masterpiece of green hills, thriving wildflowers and the majestic and mighty ocean. Then head indoors and open all the windows to let the sounds of the ocean and the gentle breeze lull you into baby sleep.

No matter where you stay on the island, the Round House restaurant is a must; book an outdoor table on a Sunday afternoon, order a glass of rum, watch the surfers and listen to the wonderful musician Aubrey ( Aubrey sang soft jazz.

* Haiyou: When you sit or lie in a hammock between two coconut trees some 50 feet above the Atlantic Ocean in Bathsheba, you know you’re in another world (apparently came up with the name “Sea-U”) World! ). Cozy, personalized, delicious home-cooked breakfasts…and, if you’re an experienced, capable, and intrepid surfer, the famous Soup Bowl is just a short walk downhill to the ocean . However, even if surfing isn’t your thing, this place is a great getaway from real life. Even if the accommodations are fancy, the environment sure is. Head over to http://SeaUBarbados.com to learn more; the site is top-notch.

* Edgewater Hotels: Nice setting, above the Atlantic Ocean, with a swimming pool… but the rooms and restaurant need updating in my opinion. Still, for a glimpse of nature’s masterpiece, like all the places on this list, this location doesn’t make it to the top. I went early one morning hoping to watch the sunrise over my morning tea. Instead of the sun, however, I was greeted by a torrential rain, one of the most dramatic displays of Mother Nature I’ve ever seen.

* Atlantis Hotel: Recently acquired by the owners of the hallowed Fish Pot restaurant on the west coast of Barbados and the very special Little Good Harbor Hotel, Barbados’ legendary Atlantis hotel is about to re-emerge. As I write this in the summer of 2009, the venerable Bathsheba property is undergoing a dramatic transformation into a truly lovely destination: a ten-room bed and breakfast. Visit the AtlantisHotelBarbados website to learn and look ahead to the completion of this exciting new addition to Barbados’ east coast in late 2009.

End this with a 3-part look at every facet of the diverse island of Barbados: the luxurious and serene Caribbean face of the West Coast, the upbeat and casual face of the South Coast, and the raw and natural face of the East Coast. Just like women, everyone is beautiful in their own unique way.
