Is This Why Your Vagina Smells?
wanda fish. At my middle school, it was the most disgraceful name any chick could be slapped on. Being called “Wanda” just means your vagina smells like “tuna in the sea.”
Understandably, girls, myself included, go to great lengths to avoid such dehumanizing stigma.
So what do you do when your stinky belly betrays an otherwise healthy vagina? The first step is to actually make sure your vagina is in top shape.
What should a vagina smell like?
It is normal to have various vaginal discharges throughout the menstrual cycle. Vaginal discharge can be in the form of a non-fertile, sticky and sticky discharge, or a very fertile, slippery and transparent discharge that occurs close to menstruation.
Unusual discharge with itching, a strong odor, and/or gray, yellow, or green discharge.
The second step in restoring vaginal health involves ruling out the possibility of a vaginal disorder, such as bacterial vaginosis, yeast infection, or trichomonas vaginitis.
Bacterial vaginosis (BV), while more common than yeast infections, doesn’t get as much attention in the media.
The cause of bacterial vaginosis is unknown, but the condition is associated with sexual activity and douching. Sexually transmitted viruses that infect vaginal Lactobacillus may cause bacterial vaginosis, according to a University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) study.
Vaginal Lactobacilli are needed to maintain a healthy pH and bacterial balance in the vagina. Once this balance is disrupted by the virus, the vagina no longer has a protective barrier and is more susceptible to infection.
In a 1999 UIC study, senior research specialist Sylvia Pavlova and associate professor of oral biology Lin Tao discovered that viruses could cause bacterial vaginosis. In addition, bacterial vaginosis can be sexually transmitted.
If left untreated, bacterial vaginosis can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, tubal pregnancy, or, if you become pregnant, premature labor.
Only your doctor can diagnose bacterial vaginosis. Your doctor will prescribe oral antibiotics or antibiotic vaginal inserts to treat bacterial vaginosis.
What to look for and smell:
Increased vaginal discharge. The vagina has a fishy smell and a white or gray milky discharge.
If you’ve used antibiotics, been pregnant, have diabetes, or wear tight clothing, chances are you’ve experienced vaginal yeast overgrowth. An overgrowth of the yeast Candida albicans is largely blamed for causing yeast infections.
Most women find their yeast infection treatment in over-the-counter preparations at drugstores. Other times, you can relieve yeast infections by reducing your sugar intake and adding more foods that contain Lactobacillus (L.) to your diet.
Dr. Tori Hudson, Medical Director of A Woman’s Time, recommends consuming foods containing at least three of the following Lactobacillus species when treating yeast infections naturally: Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus fermentum. Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus bulgaricus, Lactobacillus casei or Lactobacillus rhamnosus.
While the research battle continues regarding the effectiveness of lactic acid bacteria in combating yeast infections, women who supplement their diets with this probiotic still notice improvements in vaginal infections.
What to look for and smell:
Symptoms include a white casey discharge, itching, redness, and irritation.
Trichomonas vaginitis is the third leading cause of vaginal infections.
Commonly known as “whore,” and I mean “trick,” trichomonas vaginitis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by a tiny, single-celled parasite. Like bacterial vaginosis, trichomonas vaginitis can be spread through sexual intercourse.
Your doctor must test you to diagnose trichomonas vaginitis. She will prescribe antibiotics.
What to look for and smell:
Leucorrhea increased. Possible itching. Itching and redness with yellow-green discharge.
You know the irony of this smelly vagina business?
That is, if you have bacterial vaginosis or trichomonas vaginitis, your doctor will prescribe antibiotics for you, but after using antibiotics, your chances of contracting vaginal yeast infections will skyrocket. Who the hell designed this health scenario?
Before you curse, Wanda, let me offer you these vaginal health tips to use at your discretion:
- The vagina needs to breathe, let it breathe. Wear less pantyhose. Use knee-highs or thigh-highs instead.
- Wear cotton underwear instead of synthetic underwear.
- Use a condom during sex. Although the theory that sex can cause vaginal infections is still debated, using a condom is a preventive measure until the infection clears up.
- Add one teaspoon of boric acid or one-half cup of hydrogen peroxide to two quarts of warm water. (In order for the boric acid to mix well, you need to make sure the water is warm). Flush with boric acid or hydrogen peroxide for two weeks, then stop. Boric acid and hydrogen peroxide increase the amount of lactic acid in the vagina. Increased levels of lactic acid in the vagina help restore the proper bacterial balance in the vagina and reduce the chance of reinfection.
- Eat less sugar so you don’t feed the yeast.
- If you still have doubts, see your doctor. The Mayo Clinic Women’s “HealthSource” newsletter cautions women against rashly self-diagnosing vaginal problems and labeling every vaginal problem that smells like a “yeast infection.” This may not allow this to happen.
Ok, I hope you’re smelling better now, and if in doubt, check it out.
