Meditating Can Help Break Old Bad Habits That Can Lead To Insomnia

If you’re suffering or have had some pretty unpleasant sleepless experiences in the past, take heart. You are not alone, you sure have plenty of wide-eyed companies sharing this dilemma with you.

Currently, about 35 million Americans have some erratic night owl tendencies. They find themselves reading books, watching late night movies or listening to soothing music or sounds all night trying to fall asleep.

Many of you who have or have had sleep problems can attest to the fact that the consequences of losing a good night’s sleep, or more, are far worse than extreme tiredness, sluggish thinking, or impaired memory for the next day.

Regular insomnia can lead to increased sensitivity to aches and pains, depressed mood, and ultimately poor physical and mental health.

Many symptoms of chronic insomnia can mimic those of other health conditions, such as pain disorders such as fibromyalgia, and mood disorders such as depression, anxiety and dementia. Unless your insomnia isn’t caused by an underlying medical condition like sleep apnea, there’s definitely more than one good path to better sleep.

After repeated rounds of futile attempts to reduce sleepless nights, most people end up seeing a doctor in hopes of finding a quick-fix pill solution. Antidepressants, sedatives, or other special sleeping pills often won’t provide the real long-term relief you can count on.

Inherent drug side effects come with the territory, here, and drug tolerance to the initial effective dose that might bring your symptoms into relief. Ultimately, if a person decides to continue using the chemical, the dose will often need to be increased or switched to a different drug. It can be frustrating when you find out that your sleep problems mostly persist without medication.

According to the National Institutes of Health, primary insomnia is a common condition in itself and is not caused by an underlying medical problem. However, to be considered true insomnia, difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep must have been present for at least a month.

And, according to ASDA (American Sleep Disorders Association), insomnia is considered “chronic” when you can’t fall asleep or sleep well 3 nights a week for at least 3 months.

Primary insomnia is the type most people experience more often and is usually triggered by a specific situation, such as a traumatic event or situation in their life. The most likely theme to cause insomnia is some sort of sudden event, such as a divorce or other relationship problem, a job or career change, or the death of a friend or loved one. When the initial trauma of the sudden event eventually wears off, sometimes the insomnia part doesn’t.

Sometimes, insomnia continues because, during the triggering event, poor sleep habits are developed in response to the stressful inability to sleep. Excessive alcohol consumption, chemical drug use, overeating, and lack of regular physical activity are considered poor sleep hygiene habits. It’s a good idea to try to break these habits and avoid stimulants, including chemical and technological stimulants like coffee, tea, television, and computers.

We can all become prone to certain conditioned responses when trying to cope with chronic sleep deprivation. Some people even develop what’s known as a “sleep phobia,” a constant anxiety at bedtime about not being able to fall asleep or staying asleep.

As you know, worrying about anything before bed at night or while trying to fall asleep is never a good time to try to solve bills, work or relationship issues. Make a real effort not to worry about things you can’t control, even if you think you do have control over some of them, and take a break at night for a good night’s sleep.

If you believe in a higher power, transfer most of your worries to God or other sources of spiritual comfort. Never underestimate the power of developing a spiritual practice that can help you sleep better and assist you in many other areas of your life.

For a while, I considered myself a chronic insomniac. I can’t sleep for several nights a week, which equates to many nights a month. Over the course of 15 years of my life, due to poor relationships, I developed a unique pattern of going up and down.

Overall, during those years I tried just about everything from prescription drugs to over-the-counter sleeping pills, and I was able to find something that helped me sleep peacefully. Out of desperation, I also read and tried a lot of natural herbs. For a while, most of these substances actually worked for me.

Over the course of a long, long 15 years, I eventually discovered that all of these substances were just short-term band-aid fixes. For occasional relief from those rare sleepless nights, they’re fine. However, if you have a sudden event or situation in your life that is causing sleep deprivation, it is imperative to identify and address that issue. Whether it’s a conscious problem or a subconscious problem, meditation can help you identify problems and bring them into your visual awareness.

Luckily, I’ve only solved my sleep problems one way over the years, and I happened to discover a meditation audio made by the Immrama Institute that uses harmoniously layered binaural beats gently interwoven with soft rain sounds, very Sensitive, soothing and relaxing.

Meditation can take years of focused practice and can be difficult to learn and master in traditional ways. However, well-crafted audio can make deep relaxation almost effortless. I started using it on a regular basis. It helps me to be completely still for about 20 minutes or more a day. I managed to significantly improve my overall sleep quality in a fairly short period of time (about a month).

Regular meditation has also helped me gain better control over several other troubling issues in my life, such as:

1. Reduce overall daily anxiety levels

2. Achieve a long-term deep relaxation state

3. Improved outlook on life in general

4. Find the motivation to pursue your personal life goals

5. Enhance self-awareness and intuition

6. Increase creativity

I have been using this relaxation audio for two years and simply love it!

The long-term benefits of regular use of sound-based relaxation techniques combined with a basic understanding of biology, physics, and faithful application of ancient spiritual wisdom teachings to improve one’s life cannot be underestimated, nor can their overall effectiveness . Becoming a more spiritually centered person has its benefits and long-term advantages in overcoming any physical health issues. I have recently discovered a wealth of written information and a creative sound healing program called “Health Health Health Wealth” which I have found not only to be genuinely helpful but also very effective in calming and soothing any psychological fears a person may have.

The strategies above can help you embrace improvement. Desire can bring about some much needed, wanted, and desired self-love changes. Consciously choosing to get more consistent nutritional elements in your daily diet, getting more physical activity, and yes, even heightened mental awareness of sounds, colors, and lights can take you so far because your intuition and wisdom are not the same. will be a depressing factor.

As I embark on such an incredible journey, I would like to make a wish for all of you who suffer from insomnia. I hope you will soon be sleeping better, soundly, and challenging your mind more often. Be open to even more exciting possibilities in the near future.
