A Place Called "Wits End"? The Five Phases We Go Through

“They staggered, staggered, like a drunkard, overwhelmed.” Psalm 107:27. The story begins at verse 23. In sections 23 and 24 we find several saints selling their wares on merchant ships. We know they are having a good day because they are praising God.

But in verses 25 and 26, a sudden storm comes out of nowhere. It’s a big one. The storm was so fierce they feared for their lives.

In verse 27 we see these men being thrown around so violently that all they can do is hang on. They cannot save themselves. They are already “out of their wits”.

Like these sailors—sometimes in our Christian lives, all goes well. We praise God for all the good things he has done for us. Then the storm came out of nowhere. They keep coming. The burden has become so great that you can’t see any way out. It seems you can’t take it anymore. You find yourself crying, “My God, when is this going to stop?” – and there’s nothing you can do.

When we’re in the “storm of life,” we go through five stages

1. “Wisdom’s end” is where God sometimes starts – note God commanding the storm in v.5. No matter what storm you’re going through – God puts you there. He knows what he’s doing – he’s never surprised. The good news is, before you run into a problem – he has a solution.

He put you there for his purpose. (it’s about him) (he owns us). “We know that all things work together for good to those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. (God says not to worry. If you love me, know that all things will pass and find peace. Follow my plan exercise).” Romans 8:28

He is trying to generate something in you that will give you complete confidence and trust in him. Or maybe to strengthen you so that He can have a special ministry in your life. Sometimes we think we are waiting for God to show us something when in fact He is waiting for us to grow so He can show us it.

2. The “end of wits” is where God tests us – He lets overwhelming circumstances hit us (a storm). It could be unemployment, illness, eviction notices, marital problems or drug addiction.

“Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose hope is in the Lord.” Jeremiah 17:7. He wants to lead us down the path of obedience, trust him so he can bless us. I believe God is looking down on us and rooting for us, Brother Ray, you can do it. Trust me so I can bless you. Sometimes we get so close, but won’t give in.

Sometimes we fail the test and He may continue to lead us through it. But when we don’t, another trial follows. This is the second wave in our storm. If we only believe his first wave of trials (波), the second wave may not come.

3. “The end of our wits is where we sometimes fail the Lord—when we don’t trust God, we fail God. When we rely on ourselves or others to solve our problems.” Said the Lord; Cursed is the man whose flesh is his arm, whose heart departs from the LORD” (Jeremiah 17:5).

The Israelites explored the desert for 40 years without passing any tests. God has provided a solution to all their problems. They rejoice and praise God as they cross the Red Sea, but panic when they discover Marah’s bitter waters in the ensuing trial.

For forty years Israel received miracle food—miracle water—miracle cloud by day—miracle fire by night—miracle protection—miracle clothing that never wore out. Yet they still doubted God. Except for two people, everyone died in that desert, completely disbelieving. God wanted very much to bring them to Cannan, the land of milk and honey. But they never believed that God would use their storms.

4. “Wisdom’s end” is where God takes over – We read in verses 28 and 29 that God is in control, calms the storm, and brings them peace.

Before God takes over, the sailors must make two decisions. First, they must admit to themselves and to God that neither they nor anyone else can help them. Second, they cry out to the Lord—turn to Him alone.

Sometimes God has to break us – let’s trust him – so he can fix us.

5. The “match of wits” is where our trials become gifts. (after victory) – Sometimes his plans are not ones I would choose for myself. I don’t choose to be broke and broke, lost family, homeless (dumpster digging), cold or hungry, drug addicted or lonely – but I’ve been through all of them. I know that place is called “Wisdom and Bravery”.

I pray that I never experience any of these storms again. But I won’t take anything for the gifts they bring me.

Thousands have begun bringing others to Christ through “bridge ministry.” We are blessed in our trials. Everyone has or will experience a major tragedy in life. As Christians, when we overcome these trials through faith in God, they become gifts that can be used to comfort others and bring them to Christ.

“What a wonderful God we have – the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the source of all mercies, the One who comforts and strengthens us so wonderfully in our troubles and trials. Why should He do this ?So when others are troubled and need our sympathy and encouragement, we can pass on to them the same help and comfort that God has given us”—2 Corinthians 1:3,4.
