first act

in hospital

[l993]

This is Lee Walters’ “ward” room.Room [and, by observation the ward] It’s big, let me make it louder-. I can’t say enough about the hospital equipment. Some of the equipment looks like pipes hanging here and there, not knowing where they go, can be careless. On the table next to his bed is a book called Never-where. Lee survived a stroke and a heart attack and is waiting to go home; he had some complications from his surgery, but everything seems to be fine now; the doctor explained to him that he was actually having a second heart attack, the One was two weeks before his second attack, he didn’t know it, he assured him it was minor, it was a major attack compared to the most recent one and yes he got to the hospital in time.

He’s been in the hospital for three weeks now, had bypass surgery, had a stroke on the operating table, but again, he’s survived it all. You get the idea: – he’s getting bored, – and now, for recovery, it has its own little miracle throughout the week. We’ll get to that in a moment. He wants the doctor to discharge him this morning. But wait a second, against your doctor’s better judgment, that is.

Now you see Lee Walters trying to get comfortable in his bed as the curtain goes up, stumbling on the pillows and head on his back.and miss fremont [let’s just refer to her as “Eva” make life easy] — standing at the door, shaking his head [thinking, what a dumb clucks, Lee is; we’ll get to Lee also in a moment] “Li, what kind of bugs do you have in your bed?” she said. He’s leaning heavily against the back of the bed with a bored look on his face and a sound out of his mouth, more like a hiss, I don’t think he likes the words, but then he’s starting to get used to them, or he should be by now . The situation didn’t seem to amuse anyone, neither her comment nor his situation; he sank back into bed—

no response

Eva. plum!

still no response

Lee, please relax, it’s not good for you to use so much strength [remarks Eva again]

However, Lee remained silent

Well – (angry) – it’s your show, I don’t care [says Eva].

Li is a 35-year-old male. He’s a mail carrier making $35,000 a year. He doesn’t have a beard, but he keeps rubbing his face, as if he’s having a neurotic response. He was born a superhuman being. His mouth is a little open for something to say, or he can’t seem to breathe properly through his nose [one or the other]Either way, it didn’t help his already irritated state after spending so long in the hospital – twenty-one days.He was finally comfortable and raised his head to be at eye level with his fiancé [a light pause], now focus on her face. Now that she had his attention, she seemed a little stunned: — not knowing what to say.

plum. Eva! Do you have anything worth saying?

no response

Eva!

still no response

Eva!

Eva [with a tired attitude]. Monkeys see, monkeys do, isn’t our world like this?

plum [shaking his head, indignant]. so you say [he sucks in a breath of air] Are you here to point out my mistakes, or what?

Eva. Smarties, you can figure this out yourself.

plum.of course i can [smugly]!

Eva. I’m trying to understand how you feel, but I’m hearing your old stuff like always; you’re mean, mean–shit.

plum. Oops, I thought you were worried about bugs in my ass, I mean the bed. Really caring about my happiness, how about you admitting that you are a boring part of me, I’m used to your smart words.

Eva. You’re only half right this time, I forgot the word “bug”. Okay, you won, now let’s start — again, you know, from scratch, shall we?

plum. Oh boy, what does this mean? What am I doing in the store, another round of trying to fix my pillow so I don’t get mad at you again?

The patient in the other bed had stuffed ears

Eva [somberly]. If we annoy each other, there’s nothing I can do about it. We’re so used to making fun of everything – we forget how to be serious. But I cried when I heard about your stroke on the operating table, and your heart surgery, and I really was, asking your brother. You know you’ve been out for three days; –your left side is paralyzed–out [a slight pause]; Like there is… I don’t want to talk about it. You have twelve hour cramps too; man oh man, lucky you…!

plum. Yes, I know you’re crying, I remember that. Dr. Bash, Bush or Bean Head, I don’t know his name [a pause, he tries to get his breath]Well, Dr. Bash came in last night and said I’m doing fine – because I’m still alive. But he added, I don’t want to repeat, but I will, for a while, I’m a “fruitcake”, for a while, meaning, a few days. Can you imagine someone calling you “…fruitcake”? After a stroke?

Eva [looking straight ahead, thinking]. Excellent [pause]since you say so, you’re kind of, I mean, you’re really kind of “fruitcake” [Lee looking annoyed at Eva]. There’s nothing we can do about it, can we now — but I guess it bothers me a bit, I suppose. On the one hand, you’re a fruitcake, or out of it, you have those episodes you know, or what do you call those things, you know, make bodies jump…everywhere, whatever they are , it’s not good.We all thought you wouldn’t recover, they [the doctors] puts you in a coma because you’ve been throwing a tantrum for 12 hours; your brother is here and – he’s just as sad as your mother, she’s here every day, I mean every day, I guess if you want , she died a long time ago; ——I saw your brother shed a few tears, but you fooled everyone and healed in three days. Everyone says you are a miracle on the ward. So maybe you were a fruitcake, for a while, but on the other hand, you’re not anymore.

plum [his crabbiness showing]. Look, you’re never on my side, even when I’m sick.Excellent [pause; a moment to think], …what if I have another stroke and it’s always a fruitcake, are you going to take care of this fruitcake, or throw it in the trash? Maybe even dry out the fruitcake!

Eva.It really hurts that you ask such a question, or is it a statement [?]

plum. Excellent?

Eva. You heard me!

Li didn’t know what to say, and he slowly lowered his eyes. He began to realize that he was asking the wrong questions, and possibly the right ones. He thought the answer would be, “Yes, I will leave you.” Both Eva and Lee fell silent. She shook her head. “Yes.” Nurse Rosario came in. She looked around, then drew the curtains over him, leaving Eva alone in the doorway.

Eva. Nurse, can I help? [Lee shakes his head no to indicated to the nurse he does not want her there.]

Nurse Rosario. No, thanks Miss Fremont, I just need to do a few things. [She is taking his pulse and listening to his heart. He eyes her shape up. She has a nice well-formed figure, and her skin looks a bright-olive, she is all of twenty-nine years old. She is about five feet two inches tall, and she speaks slow, but confident.]
