May Bank Holiday is DIY Day
This coming weekend, people across the UK will be celebrating ancient rituals associated with the first bank holiday in May. No, we don’t mean dancing around the Maypole, being crowned May Queen or watching Morris dance. We’re not even going for special events in Bristol like meeting Pat the postman at Bristol Zoo on 3rd May or taking the Bristol Harbor Train on 1st-3rd May or even the 2nd in the city Museum hands-on toys. While some will no doubt enjoy these pastimes, many more will indulge in the now traditional early May ritual known as DIY
Yes, spring cleaning is over, our home feels clean and fresh, and we are now starting to notice all these little jobs we need to do to spruce up our home. The May bank holiday may have been a day off for farm workers to celebrate spring and the end of planting, but it has turned into a weekend where we spend more at DIY shops and garden centers than at any other time.
With that in mind, we thought we’d give you some tips on how to prep and clean up after your DIY job.
Let’s focus mainly on the most obvious DIY task; a quick paint job to a room, door or baseboards. For this task, preparation is everything. First make sure to remove furniture, paintings, and any other objects from the area to be painted. Then cover any nearby furniture with a dust cloth. If you don’t have old sheets, do a quick trip to your nearest charity shop where you can find old sheets, curtains or duvet covers to use as dust sheets for a few quid. Don’t forget to cover the floors as well, and if you are painting baseboards, make sure to cover the carpet up to the baseboards.
Next check what you need to do to clean up any paint spills. It depends on whether you are using water-based paint, oil-based paint or acrylic paint. There will be instructions on the can about cleaning up spills or how to clean the brush, which you need to read before opening the can. No matter what method you use, you’ll likely need plenty of rags, old newspapers, and kitchen rolls, so be prepared.
Finally, clear the area of all pets and small children and you’re good to go.
Lots of other DIY tasks are sure to create a lot of dust, which is exactly what you need to spring clean your new home. As with painting tips, cover as much of the furniture as possible with dust sheets, and consider whether drapes need to be removed. For a quick job, you can wrap a dust cloth around the drapes so you don’t have to take them off.
When you’re done DIY, carefully take any dust cloths outside. Make sure the wind isn’t blowing in the direction of your open windows or your neighbor’s house, and shake off dust as carefully as possible. If you have a clothesline, hang the sheets out for a day before folding them up for another use.
No matter how careful you are, a small amount of dust will get into the carpet and furniture, so give the room a thorough cleaning before you use it again. Ventilate the room, remove any lingering paint odors, and relax knowing a job well done.
