Washing Your Car: More Than Just a Bucket of Suds

Your car is one of your most important purchases, second only to your home, and while washing your car may seem like a no-brainer, there are a few tricks you should know to protect your investment.

Wash your car regularly, not just when you have company in town or plan to take the boss to dinner. Keeping your car clean and free of dirt and debris reduces rust and helps preserve your car’s value.

clean the exterior

Choose a soft car sponge and a sturdy bucket filled with cold water for car wash projects, but stay away from harsh cleaners like dish soap or laundry soap, as they can damage the finish. Even better, invest in a plethora of quality car care products like car wash soap, tire conditioners, wheel cleaners, and other products designed for cleaning leather or vinyl interiors.

– Choose a shaded area to wash your car, as direct sunlight can be absorbed by dark car finishes and form water spots.

– Soak the car in cold water first to remove excess dirt and debris from the surface.

– Rinse the wheel wells to remove mud and grime that may have accumulated in the bodywork, which can trap moisture, which can lead to premature rust.

– Start at the top and follow the car down.

– Use cold water as warm or hot water will remove applied wax.

– Wash tires and wheels. Car wash soap and water will never damage chrome or specialty wheels.

– Rinse in soapy water and towel dry. I’ve found that a nice old soft bath towel works well.

Special Note: The only thing that will remove sap from car paint is cold water.

Dents and Scratches

Once you notice small dents or scratches in the paint, use a small amount of touch-up paint. Touch-up paint will help prevent spots of rust. Larger dents, dents, and scratches should also be addressed as soon as possible to avoid rust.

Refinish paint is available at most aftermarket auto supply stores, however, if you have a special color please contact your dealer. They should be able to order tubes for the lowest cost.

Lubrication door

Here’s a quick trick to get rid of squeaks in your car doors. Use new oil on the hood, rear doors, and door junctions to keep them well lubricated. Pour the oil on the bottom of the door and run it between the layers of steel to avoid sticking and rust. Some people find that spraying oil into the hole in the door also helps, but keep it away from the window rails so the oil doesn’t stain the glass.

For best results, use an oil pump canister available at an auto parts store. However, avoid old motor oil that contains acids that can cause your car to rust.

don’t forget inside

You’ve heard the phrase “in and out” in connection with camping or picnicking in a state or national park, but many people find that the same philosophy helps keep the interior of their car clean and tidy.

Here are some more tips for cleaning the interior of your vehicle:

– Keep plastic garbage bags in the glove box for trash, and keep toys, tools, and first aid supplies in airtight storage boxes.

– Keep your carpet floor mats clean by covering them with cheap plastic floor mats that are easy to wipe clean.

– Multitasking: Buying fuel is a great time to empty out the trash in your car. Most gas stations have trash cans next to the fuel pump, so why not take advantage of them and remove any trash that may have accumulated.

– Sweep the carpet and dust the dashboard.

– Treat leather or vinyl with products designed for the task.

– A damp soft cloth is a great tool for dusting the dashboard without causing any damage.

Clean stains from furniture

Before you can effectively clean a stain, you first need to identify what it is. Tar and oil stains require solvent-based (petroleum) cleaners. Pour some solvent on the cloth, and dab in a fanning circle until the solvent is gone. Repeat if necessary.

Food, soda, and other non-petroleum stains respond best to mild soap and water. I found an automotive product called Tuff Stuff that works on everything from fabrics to vinyl and carpet. However, it is not a solvent-based product, so it cannot remove tar or oil stains.

clean windows

There’s nothing like looking at the scenery through a clean windshield. When washing windows, use a high-quality glass cleaner and a soft cloth. Try this trick – a horizontal motion to clean the inside of the window, then a vertical motion to clean the outside of the window. That way, if there is a stripe, you can quickly identify which side of the window it is on.

just in case

Always keep a pencil and paper in your car in case of an accident. Also, put all car files in one folder for easy access. Most cell phones are equipped with a camera, however, if yours does not, keep a disposable camera handy to take pictures of the scene of the accident for the police or your insurance company to use.

My car is so dirty – I don’t know where to start

If you’ve neglected car maintenance, fear not. Invest in automotive details for your car or truck. For anywhere from $75 to $150, they’ll clean your car like new and make maintaining your vehicle easier.

Once they get you back on track, just keep washing, vacuuming and dusting as normal to keep your car looking its best. A well-maintained car will appreciate in value when it is resold.
