Evolution of a Vital Software – The Internet Browser
An Internet browser is a software application that acts like an opening that allows you to access information on the global network known as the Internet. Without them, there is no internet access because they are the only way to transfer data at the node level (i.e. client level). To use Google or Yahoo or any other website, you need to go through a tunnel called Internet browser, so this exploit makes it an essential application.
The first Internet browser hit the world around 1991. When Tim-Berners Lee launched the first browser called the Worldwide Web, it became the starting point for several new technologies. They used NeXT computers developed by NeXT and later transformed into Apple’s famous Macintosh series. This NeXT computer became the world’s first web server. The World Wide Web uses hypertext to transmit and share information.
Next came NCSA Mosaic, which ushered in the era of graphical browsers. But Mosaic didn’t go too far, transforming into a well-known company called Netscape. Netscape launched a browser called Netscape Navigator in 1994 to great success. Seeing the heated discussion, how can Microsoft sit back and watch the big drama. In 1995, Microsoft launched a flagship product called Internet Explorer. This launch sparked the browser wars.
During this time, Microsoft enjoyed a sort of monopoly in the operating system market, launching Internet Explorer as a free tool and its operating system, Microsoft Windows 95, thus beginning the famous rivalry between Microsoft and Netscape. Both Internet browsers rolled out version after version in order to capture the largest market share. Then came 1998, when this famous rivalry led to the famous US Microsoft antitrust case, and everything changed after that. Netscape was eliminated from the market and Internet Explorer became the new definition of web browser.
More than 94 percent of people surfing the Internet used Internet Explorer until 2004, when an open-source Internet browser called Mozilla Firefox hit the market and Microsoft started having problems. Microsoft’s market share shrank sharply, and Firefox began to spread like wildfire. Even Opera has repurposed itself and entered the market based on current web surfing practices. The latest to enter is Google’s answer, Chrome. Chrome is also an open-source web browser, and there are now several strong competitors in the browser market. Firefox and Chrome are competing fiercely with Internet Explorer.
So, only time can tell which browser will win the browser wars. As consumers, we must keep a close eye on all newer releases and the upgrades offered within them so we can stand out from the competition.
