Movie Review – Tokyo Story (1953)

There are some films whose “production value” is beyond reproach (to put it mildly). The sound is average. The camera is fine. There’s no sex or car chases either. But the story is so real and so heart-wrenching that it’s seared indelibly on your memory. Tokyo Story is a humble work by any means, but such a powerful story that it sweeps you over with its powerful narrative currents. Yasujiro Ozu’s classic, G-rated series for all ages.

The story in a nutshell: An elderly couple living in a small village in Japan went to Tokyo to visit their children, but they regretted their decision.

Fumi Hirayama (Chieko Higashiyama) and his wife Hideyoshi (Ryu Chishu) are an elderly couple who leave their fishing village in southern Japan to visit their son, daughter, and daughter-in-law in Tokyo. They come here with hope because they believe their children are doing well, but the reality they face is a little different.

Their son Koichi (played by Mune Yamamura) is a community doctor who works day and night to earn money. Their daughter is a hairdresser who clearly loves money and her comfort more than her gentle parents.

But maybe “gentle” Tomi also has a dark and violent past that surfaces when he goes out for a night out with old friends he hasn’t seen in decades. It turns out that their children’s lower-than-expected social status and perceived failure are the bleeding wounds of all of them. As parents, they have higher expectations for all their children, but apparently “life has stepped in”…

Even when the Hirayama children send the old couple on vacation to the beautiful seaside resort of Atami Onsen, the younger guests still have so much fun crafting, gambling, and singing until the early hours of the morning that the Hirayama couldn’t After sleeping, they hastily retreated to Tokyo.

In the end, the elderly couple had to admit that Tokyo was not their place and that their children were too busy to give them the attention and love they so desperately needed at this advanced age.

The only person who gives them time and shares her meager resources with them is their widow Noriko: an angel on earth who is still dedicated to honoring her late husband who passed away 8 years ago.

When the Hirayamas finally returned to their small village, tragedy struck and took their elderly mother with them.

The children gathered to pay their final respects and feel guilty for the parents who neglected them all these years.

But in the end life has to go on. The chimneys of the factory are constantly smoking, and people get up and go to work like ants every day. Modern Japan has its own ruthless logic, which is good for the economy but bad for some elderly people who can’t keep up with the hellish pace of cynical city life.
