Home Schooling Nine to Twelve Year Olds and Socialization

There is a lot of peer pressure when homeschooling kids ages 9 to 12. Remember that not all children are under pressure to get along with and like their peers, while keeping their parents at arm’s length. These preteens still need a lot of attention, eye contact, positive reinforcement and praise, personal communication, and good interactions with their parents. Believe it or not, kids this age still love being read aloud. Maintain a positive learning attitude; focus on making learning fun and engaging. Make sure to use positive constructive criticism with as little academic pressure as possible. Focus on providing a safe, secure learning environment that encourages love, acceptance and assurance. This will, in time, increase their sense of self-worth and help them understand where their values lie.

In this age of hormonal, emotionally complex, and changing moods, group planning is recommended as part of the curriculum. Preteens prefer learning skills that have a reason or purpose in real life. For example, instead of being offered a busy language arts job, have your child write to a manufacturing company about your defective household product. Not only will this make the child feel important, but learning the task will become a much-needed skill in real life. Use real-life money and budgeting examples as you learn math, and even balance your checkbook. Use graphs and charts to set goals for money earned and savings. Reading about science from textbooks is one way to learn about the subject, but doing experiments or identifying specimens in nature is more engaging. Daily and weekly chores are necessary to learn the responsibilities and obligations of being an integral part of the family.

Remember to always imitate what you want to teach. Learn new topics together. Dissect a grasshopper for science, create a household budget together, and more. Homeschooling allows parents to design a curriculum that works for their child. Find out your preteen’s strengths and weaknesses and plan your lessons around these.

Homeschooling and Socialization:

When parents talk about homeschooling their children, the most common concern concerns socialization. Parents worry that their children won’t learn how to handle social situations. That’s not going to happen unless homeschooling parents decide to completely isolate their kids from the outside world. In fact, homeschooled kids had more interactions with people of all ages, not just their age group. Homeschooled children take, on average, more educational field trips per year than non-homeschooled children. In addition, homeschooled children have more opportunities for after-school activities, such as music lessons, sports, and hobbies.

Homeschooling feels equally comfortable with younger children, peers, and adults of all ages. Homeschooled children have daily social interactions with their families, neighbors, and communities. Because of this, research shows that homeschooled kids have higher self-esteem. School-schooled kids don’t experience real-world situations, while homeschooled kids are definitely more prepared for the real world.

The type of socialization experienced in school is usually negative. Large school environments involve conformity, teasing, bullying, aggressive behavior, popularity contests, and competition. No wonder homeschooled kids have higher self-esteem; kids at home are learning kindness, patience, sharing, respect, and understanding. These homeschooled children are free from peer influence that fosters peer dependence. Peer-dependent children exhibit diminished positive socialization, such as self-worth, self-confidence, respect for parents, and trust in peers. Although homeschooled children may play with other children in the neighborhood and experience this peer dependency, strong morals and values are being taught at home to overcome these negative experiences.

Homeschooled children learn to listen to their instincts and let them guide them in making their own decisions. Conforming to peer social groups that do not value individuality will not develop the independent thinking that is necessary for a successful life.
