A Creative Way To Finding Money For College Tuition

Like I was for many years, my friend Cheryl is a single mother. Cheryl’s daughter is going to be the first of her 3 girls to go to college. This young lady wants to be an elementary school teacher because she loves kids and wants to one day have some of her own and having those summers and holidays off with her own children in the future is very important to her. She’ll be attending a 2 year junior college to begin with as she doesn’t want to go into major debt getting her degree. Sounds like a good head on her shoulder don’t you think?

The FAFSA has been approved, the Pell Grant received, and after all scholarships are in and all monies applied towards room and board, books, computer, and tuition, there’s still a deficit. Finding that last $4,000 for her daughter’s first year in college has been a challenge for my friend, especially since she doesn’t want to take out any student loans. So, we started brainstorming on how to quickly raise money for college tuition. This is how we found it!

I remembered many years ago when Cheryl’s grandparents passed away she was left with many items to do with what she wanted. I also remembered that some of those items were old treasures, antiques and collectibles. They’ve always remained in boxes stored away in the basement and we both agreed that they’d probably never come upstairs to be displayed and the girls probably would never want them either. We got busy digging those treasures out, cleaning them off and began taking pictures of everything. There were extensive salt and pepper shakers, pristine old kitchen items, a huge doll collection, a couple of very old, heavy and ornate chess sets, vintage jewelry and clothing as well as other nick-nacky stuff. We even uncovered a stamp collection and old World War II memorabilia.

I got this idea of selling things online because my husband had recently told me that our sister-in-law had started liquidating his brother’s hunting things by putting them on and selling them on E-Bay. She, in one afternoon, made almost $1500 by auctioning off his old and extensive Ducks Unlimited items. Not too shabby I would say.

It was a very good day when those bids started flying in after we had placed her grandparents antiques and collectibles on the auction site. What looked almost impossible to gather $4000 in a month was made possible. Cheryl knew that grandma and grandpa would absolutely not have any problem with selling these things in order for one of their great-granddaughters to further her education.
