Cockatiel Egg Fostering

There will come a time when dire situations will push you to take urgent steps to save your cockatiel eggs. Some, especially young parents, might abandon egg-laying. The sudden absence or death of one parent will also lead to the complete abandonment of the eggs. The nesting activity to support egg-laying is a two-way job, at most the hen sits on the eggs all night while the male gives her intervals of rest during the day. The task will be too much for a single parent to accomplish and although there are legends that they happen, It will be really impossible to accomplish without divine intervention. That would be the divine in you.

So there are actually two options for saving the egg-laying, both of which require you to completely remove the eggs from their biological parents. One is to incubate them artificially and then feed them by hand from day one, a rewarding but thoroughly expensive and most often, heartbreaking experience because chicks hand-fed from day one are prone to a myriad of diseases, lacking the immunity provided by a nurturing parent.

The other option is fostering. Feeding was an old strategy to allow some species to escape extinction. Bengals or Society Fringes are famous foster parents that they really don’t need a female and male partnership to get the job done. When they see the clutch, the whole “society” will adopt and raise them. The parrot world of the cockatiel is not as lucky as the finches, however, feeding is possible only to those who, in the same period, also nest.

So option one. Raise the abandoned egg-laying to another nesting pair of cockatiels. Make sure the difference in age between the original spawn and the one to be raised is not more than three (3) days old. This is to avoid any large disparity in size of the offspring. The larger ones will compete with the late arrivals for food and when the difference is too great the parents will most likely switch to survival mode and sacrifice the smaller egg laying.

Option number two. Raise the eggs to another nearby, similar-sized parrot species, most often the Budgerigar. Just like rule number one, observe the disparity in the age of the eggs. Remember that the count starts when the incubation begins. The cockatiel and the budgerigar have the same average incubation period, eighteen to twenty-one (18-21) days.

Option three. Feeding under the African lovebirds. These are so popular that most bird keepers have at least a couple of them. Although they are smaller, they are good and willing foster parents. The problem is that the chicks will be bigger than their foster parents after two weeks, so be prepared to resume hand feeding after this period. They will be easier to maneuver at this stage and have acquired the most necessary immunity from their African parents.

Option three. Feeding under smaller species and larger species of parrots such as the parakeet. No experienced breeder has reported any success, so it is better to abandon the idea and proceed with hand feeding.

Breeding is a privilege for some, but when available, is a great time, money and pet saver.
