Bringing Home Your New Puppy – What to Expect and How to Involve Your Children
Things to Expect When You Bring Your New Puppy Home:
Chew – Understand that puppies LOVE to chew! They will chew your shoes, your furniture, your children’s toys, etc., just to name a few. This doesn’t mean you have to let your puppy run amok over your house, he’ll just need some training.
Housebreaking – This will definitely take some time. You cannot expect a puppy to be fully potty trained until they are several months old and some even take up to a year. A young puppy just can’t control himself if he has to wait to go outside. This is no different than training your child, you have to have patience.
Invest in a Dog Crate – Puppies need their own little “Nest”. A crate is a great place for your puppy to go for safety and won’t mind staying in it when you’re not watching him. You can also put your puppy in this crate at night so you don’t have to worry about whether or not he wanders off to potty on your carpet.
Use a Baby Gate – You can use a baby gate during the day to confine your puppy to a place like your kitchen, because that’s where you usually have linoleum or tile floors that are easy to clean when your puppy has an accident.
Give Your Kids “Puppy” Tasks
Please never expect your young child to train the puppy. It’s just too hard for them because they’re young themselves. But there are things you can teach your kids so they feel like they have some input into training your puppy.
a. Feeding – A dog will eat itself into oblivion if you leave it to your children to put your puppy on a schedule and feed them at the same time every day. This also helps regulate your puppy’s bowel movements.
b. Bathing – Your kids will have fun doing this. They just need to make sure the water is at room temperature and not to get the pet shampoo in your pup’s eyes or ears.
c. Brushing – Your puppy will love this and it’s something very easy that your child can learn to do. This should be done daily. It will keep your puppy clean not to mention remove excess hair that they will shed. Your puppy will LOVE the attention.
d. Walking – This should be done twice a day, morning and evening. This not only gives your puppy exercise but also gives your children a chance to get out of the house and exercise themselves. We live in a world of games and computers and our kids just don’t get enough exercise. Walking their dog is a good routine to get into.
e. Potty Accidents – They will also need to pick up after your puppy has a potty accident. (This goes for kids who are old enough to do this…not toddlers) This will teach your kids that you have to take the “not so fun” stuff along with the fun times they have with their new puppy .
Just remember that dogs take a lot of time and patience, so expect your life to slow down a bit. You will soon realize how much joy they can bring to not only your children’s lives but yours as well. It can be a way for your family to reconnect. There’s just something about that feeling you get from your dog that gives you unconditional love.
