Farm Life with Sam

Sam is a Belgian horse weighing approximately 1900 pounds and standing about 17.3 hands tall. He is gelded and approximately 27 years old. Now, life with Sam can be interesting. If he ever discovered just how big he was, there would be no stopping him.

I think one of the funniest episodes with Sam so far has been with our friends little Jack Russell who decided to take Sam on. This little guy was going to eat Sam alive. Our daughter was riding Sam and came around the house not knowing TJ was out. We were in the house and heard him just a barking and growling. Of course, our daughter stopped Sam who just stood there looking at this little dog. Sam did not know what to think of TJ. It took some doing but TJ was convinced to go inside. Sam never budged.

Sam is my baby. If he is trying to let the goats out, I can open the back door and yell-SAM BACK! He stops, backs a couple of steps, and looks around to see where I am. Sometimes, I close the door to see what he will do. Usually, he just leisurely walks off.

The only thing I have ever seen bother Sam is high wind-I am talking 45 mph plus wind. Now, it is impressive to see that large of a horse with all four hoofs in the air. We have seen him rear once. We were filling the stock tank and my son, whose over six feet tall, was standing next to Sam. Bozey, our 21-year-old quarter horse, decided to hit the hose, sending water up Sam’s nose. Sam reared and our son got a first hand look at just how big Sam is.

Now, water is a big issue with our horses. Our daughter was filling the stock tank in the colt’s pen when she heard some commotion. There Bozey was playing with the hose and Smokey, her colt, was trying to drink out of the tank. Just as our daughter stepped up to the fence to get the hose from Bozey, Smokey grabbed the end of it soaking our daughter.

When it is hot here (most of the year), our horses love to be soaked with the hose so filling the stock tanks can be time consuming. They love to get a bath, however, like most horses, they immediately lay down in the sand and roll.

Sam will stand forever to let children sit on him to have their picture made. He loves children and our grandchildren love to be lead around so they can ride him. Our hens and roosters can walk all around and underneath him. We even had a baby pygmy goat get out and was standing between Sam’s rear legs. Sam froze. We froze so we could sum up the situation. The little billy took off running and we were off to catch him. Sam never budged.

We have been told stories by Sam’s previous owner of how he stops, looks and listens at intersections. I truly believe he is one of the smartest horses I have seen in a long time. Both Sam and Bozey take direction from me without even being on a lead line. This is very helpful if they get loose.

We thought we were forgetting to lock the pasture gate but really could not believe after all these years it would happen regularly. Well, Bozey was the culprit. The last time she let Sam and herself out was about midnight. I heard Smokey having a fit and got up to check out what was happening. There, standing at the back door were Sam and Bozey. It was as if they knew they had done something wrong and were there to confess. We walked them back to their pasture and went back to bed.

Bozey had been sick and penned up. She was ready to run and romp but I was not quite ready to let her. She saw her chance to get out and she was gone-running around loose in the yard and to the woods. I stepped out of her pen, yelled, and pointed at her gate. She came to a stop, turned and reluctantly trotted back into her pen.

I have been truly blessed with Sam and Bozey. Like everyone else that has lived on a farm or ranch, we have had animals that have tried our patience. There is no substitution for well-trained animals. Sam and Bozey have helped create wonderful family memories and I am sure will continue to do so for quite some time.
