The Perfect List of Must Have Toys for Your Newborn Baby

So now you have your beautiful new bundle of joy! Congratulations! Away you go back to your home, or in my case, my second son came so fast that I never left home. You are thrilled, in awe of how beautiful this new life is. Everyone calls and tells you how spectacular a parent you will be. Only the best things are in her nursery. A solid, safe crib, sturdy changing table, comfy swing, fresh paint, and lots of blankets and diapers are all ticked off the checklist, but what about some toys? You may be wondering if a newborn baby even needs toys. Whether you feel like she does or not, the following list of toys should stay posted on any new parent’s fridge. Several of these toys can even let you put your paws up and catch a cat nap! Trust me, grab those while you can!

MOBILITY: Studies show that a newborn can see about 8 inches away, and while that’s not far enough to see a cell phone hung over a crib, by the time she’s one month old, she’ll be able to follow objects from left to. just at a longer distance. Using a cell phone will not only test her sense of sight, but modern cell phones also play music or rotate. If an expensive modern cell phone isn’t your style, there are many ways to make your own cell phone from simple items. Please make sure your homemade mobile is secure, of course.

PLAY MAT: A play mat is a great place for panto time. Tummy time helps strengthen back and neck muscles and develops coordination. Many play mats today are made with bright colors and a variety of fabrics to help catch your baby’s eye. Some have different textures, attachable toys and even swimming fish! Don’t just let your angel have her tummy time on a boring old rug. Choose inviting primary colors and soft fabrics. Plus, the comfort and portability of play mats is an added bonus!

PICTURE BOOK: Sharing a book of attractive and colorful pictures with your new baby is a wonderful activity! While it’s easy to buy one from the toy store, personalizing your pictures or creating a story to read to your baby is even better! Visit an online store to make your own photo book with descriptive captions that turn your pictures into an adventure. Using family photos, this can help your baby learn the identification of those who will be visiting her soon. I did this with my children every day and by the time they were about six months old they could recognize the grandparents when they came to visit.

FINGER MARIONS: When our first son was born, my husband practiced counting with him every day. He held up his fingers, counted one to five, and had a lot of fun. Although hands and fingers can be fascinating on their own to a newborn, picking up a marker and drawing a silly face on your finger turns them into characters! Imagine making your own finger puppets out of fun fabrics and accessories like plastic eyeballs or yarn for hair. Even aluminum foil can make a great tin finger! If the thought of trick-or-treating terrifies you, buy finger puppets online or at a local toy store. One word of caution, start with only one puppet at a time. Using all five finger puppets at once can shock your pack!

SMALL RAT: Although your baby can’t yet pick up and hold objects by herself, she can grasp quite well. Mothers who forget to brush their hair already know this! By placing a soft rattle in her hand and shaking it a little, this will help teach her cause and effect. “If I move this, it will make a noise.” Using an older wooden or plastic rattle is also fine. However, in my experience, the softer, fabric rattles leave less of a blow on the head when a baby accidentally shakes the rattle. To rock a twist on the classic rattle, look for rattle shoes or wrist rattles! These are great for when your baby is in the car seat riding around town.

ROCKER/SWING: The soothing baby swing should be made in adult sizes! Out of all the toys, this really is a MUST in my opinion. Although every baby is different and a swing may be preferred over a rocking chair or swing, this just needs to be on your list of things to buy. It not only gives you a chance to take a little baby break, but if you put it near a window, mirror or picture, baby has a beautiful scenery to see! Some mothers also find that a swing is an effective place to nap, however, never leave your baby unattended while she is in the swing/swing. There are many rockers and swingers to choose from. Some even have music options, cell phones or foldable for portability, but don’t obsess over the look; you may have to go through trial and error to find which one your baby prefers.

BATHTUB: How can a bathtub be a toy? Honestly, one of the best things to spend quality time with your new baby is a bath! Delaying this with my first was a HUGE mistake! Don’t wait! Babies will love bath time with a baby tub. Today’s toddler tubs are designed to fit in or over most kitchen sinks. This is very ergonomically convenient. Buying one with a baby sling or hammock as I like to call it that fits inside the tub helps make bath time a little easier on you. The hammock is connected to the sides and supports baby while the baby “floats” in the water. There are also models that are more of a bucket style with a seat inside. These help keep baby upright, in a sitting position while you bathe her. No matter how you “wash” it, the tub is a great place for play, exercise, and quality time with the little splash!

MUSIC: Kids love music! It can be a phenomenal tool for teaching and learning. From the beginning baby already knows all the sounds during your day as she developed during your pregnancy. Find a regular day of the day dedicated to music. Put her in her crib, swing, special floor mat or just in your arms! Listening to good music while you dance with her can be refreshing for both of you! With modern and convenient technology, you can create a personal playlist or a specific station on internet radio and take it with you on your phone. Or you can be a little old fashioned and shop for a newborn music CD. For a more personal touch, singing to your baby is the best music to her ears! Create your own concert and create songs based on your daily activities. Diaper changes are fun when there’s a song to go along with it. With so many options to choose from with music, it might be your best toy yet!

MOTHER SCENTED TOY/STUFF: Lastly, most new babies have some sort of stuffed animal or special blanket chosen by the parents. To make this keepsake stand out, take the stuffed animal and rub it through your hair or over your body to convey your scent. It may sound silly, but your baby knows how you smell and transferring your scent to the toy will help calm her down when you can’t be around. This works well for both mother and father or even other family members, although it is most effective with the mother. A familiar smell also helps your baby with recognition. Be careful what you choose, however, making sure it is safe for baby to use and can be washed regularly. And don’t forget to transfer your scent again after you’ve washed the item!

A newborn baby does not need fancy or expensive toys. A few simple things combined with creativity can be just what she wants. It is important to remember, however, that babies do get bored. On the same note, they can also be overstimulated. Learning the right balance for you and your baby will come with time. Utilizing the toys described above will help find this balance. Whether you’re soothing your baby with a gentle hum, shedding tears in the bath, or giving her a puppet show with your fingers, the most loved, entertaining and free toy for your new baby is YOU!
