Choosing Your Dog – A Friend For Life
Congratulations! You decide to get a dog. What breed, how big, does it shed, long or short fur, what climate do you live in, do you live in the city or country, do you have children, do you have allergies etc? With over 150 varieties to choose from, this task can be quite daunting. Having a dog can be frustrating at times. When your dog is a puppy and learning the household ropes, your typical daily routine can be disrupted.
A dog is a living, breathing creature. They have needs, wants, and demands, not to mention lots of love to give. Their lifespan is usually between 10-15 years. In addition to the purchase price, there are costs for feeding, grooming and veterinary care. Larger dogs, such as St. Bernards, eat more than Chihuahuas. Samoyeds need weekly, if not daily grooming. Schnauzers don’t shed, but occasionally need a haircut.
Breeds are divided into groups. Sporting, Retriever, Working, Terrier, Toy, Non-Sporting, Herding and Miscellaneous. Each group represents what the dog is best at. For example, the Siberian Husky is a member of the working group. Due to their amazing stamina, they are used in dog sled racing. They can run for miles and never seem to break a sweat. Working dogs (like the Siberian Husky) are usually high energy dogs. It takes a lot of activity to tire them out. If you don’t want to sweat while watching your dog, a toy dog is perfect.
Size is a factor to consider. Do you live in an apartment that only allows dogs, or does your own house have a large backyard? The age and temperament of the owner are key to help determine the size. Older adults may be better suited for Yorkshire Terriers than Labradors. Remember that all dogs start small, but the breed of dog determines the final size. Even a Great Dane starts small but quickly grows into a pony that needs a large yard and lots of food.
If you own a long-haired dog, having a quality vacuum is key. The double coat on Samoyeds and Siberian Huskies sheds profusely. You will need to vacuum several times a week. Grooming has to become a habit to help stop and control some shedding. However, if you don’t want to vacuum or remove fur from your clothes, a schnauzer is a good choice. They don’t shed their hair and just need a haircut every few weeks.
Where do you live? Do you live in Florida or Wisconsin? Chihuahuas would be comfortable living in Florida, but not in Wisconsin. The opposite is true for the Alaskan Malamute.
Kennels that breed purebred dogs are a very reliable source. Professional breeders know the lineage of each of their dogs. They raise healthy dogs and will let you know about any health issues the parents have and what is normal as your dog ages. You can apply to be a member of a dog club that specializes in the breed you’re looking for. You can also find more information at the National Kennel Club.
Dogs are a man’s (and women’s and children’s) best friend. Your dog will soon become a part of your family, so doing your research before you buy a dog will help prevent you from getting a poor quality dog, or one that just isn’t right for you. Be sure to have a written guarantee from the breeder. This way, if the dog is not suitable, you can return it within a certain period of time. Purchasing a puppy from a breeder will allow you to know the dog’s date of birth, photo, registration name, and registration of the sire and mother (dad and mama dog).
Good luck to you and your new best friend!
