The Differences Between Glitz and Natural Beauty Pageants
I got the same question this week from two different mothers whose daughters both hope to be Miss America someday.
What’s the difference between flashy and natural beauty pageants, and which one do I recommend?
Both glitz and natural beauty pageants can help young girls develop confidence and stage presence in a fun environment; but there is a big difference between the glitzy world of glitz and the natural world. To see where my point comes from, let me start by pointing out that these two young girls wanted to compete in the Miss America system. Second, I am a professional natural beauty coach and my specialty is resume writing, interview/communication skills, and positive self-image development.
natural beauty
Pageant systems that fall into this category are Miss National America (NAM), Co-ed America (COED), Miss International Teen (IJM), National Teen USA (ANTSO), Cinderella, Outstanding Teen USA, Miss America, Teen World, Miss America, Mrs America, Mrs America and Mrs International. There’s more, but this is an example of a system familiar to those in the pageant world.
- In general, there are zero makeup guidelines for children under the age of 12. Some are only allowed to wear mascara and lip gloss on stage under bright lights. Teens and women wear makeup to enhance their natural beauty, not to be the center of attention or make them look like another person. The same goes for hairstyles. Always make sure to check with your director about the specifics of the pageant.
- The clothes are tasteful and sparkling; but not overly ornate. Wardrobes are usually available in-store and are elaborately decorated or custom-made by the contestants to reflect their personality and style. A wardrobe is always about bringing attention back to the girl who wears it. Not the other way around.
- The style of the dress is elegant and smooth. Arms and hands close to your body, moving in natural opposition (when you step forward with your right foot, your left arm moves forward, and so on).
- Natural facial expressions, lively eyes, and a complementary smile.
- Develop communication skills through on-stage presentations, personal interviews, and on-stage questioning.
Who does well in natural beauty pageants? Contestants who enjoy public speaking, are artistically gifted, have good grades, are passionate about charity, and are well-rounded tend to stand out in natural beauty pageants. These skills can be easily applied to life beyond the pageant stage.
glitz pageant
There are many flashy beauty pageants all over the country. If your child has been lucky enough to have a facial, this could be the place to start. The Glitz pageant offers young children the opportunity to get used to being on stage before they can talk.
- In glam beauty pageants, you’ll see most contestants sport wigs, heavy makeup, deep spray, false teeth (called flippers), false eyelashes and colored contact lenses.
- flashy pageant outfits are usually short cupcake dresses. A cupcake skirt is a dress that rises a few inches above the knee and has layers of lace with lots of stones and dazzles. Most of the dresses you see on the TV show Toddlers and Tiaras are cupcake dresses and were shot in flashy beauty pageants.
- Flashy pageants have their own style. Thanks to the full cupcake skirt, contestants learn to walk with their hands away from their body, fingertips gently curled at the outer hem of the skirt. When they walk, their arms don’t move in the natural opposing way. Instead, they move in the same direction (if you step out with your right foot, your right arm moves slightly with it).
- Facial expressions are often exaggerated, with a lot of eyelash flapping, head tilting from side to side, and kisses being blown.
- Opportunities to develop oral communication skills are limited in flashy pageants. If a contestant speaks, briefly or only state her name, age and where she is from. This may be because most of the contestants are infants and toddlers whose language is not yet developed. Again, the focus is on outer beauty.
Who does well in the glitzy beauty pageant? Contestants who really like to dress up and create new characters on stage will love the flashy pageant. The crown was bigger than the child’s head, and the trophy was twice as tall. There are usually a lot of prizes as well.
Just make sure your child can tolerate combing hair, sticking eyelashes and heavy makeup. Glitz pageants are high maintenance and expensive. They are very popular and easy to find for children under 5 years old.
Because the flashy environment is meant to create an illusion, it can be difficult, but not impossible, for kids who have only participated in flashy pageants to successfully transition to natural pageants as they get older. Styling styles, limited speaking experience and facial expressions developed at an early age are habits that are hard to break.
So to answer the second part of your question about which pageant type I would recommend, since these two little girls want to be Miss America one day (and who 10 year olds don’t want to be) I would say stick to the natural pageant system.
