Woody the Weird Woodpecker’s Prayer

Owls raised Woody. So the story goes. Many, many springs ago, an egg fell on a squirrel. Sensing a wriggling snake coming toward it, the squirrel picked up the egg and ran with it to Bertie the Owl. “Bertie, this egg just fell on my back. It jumped into some bushes and I was quick enough to save it from that horrible snake.” Bertie agreed to raise the egg as his own and soon after Woody was born.

Most owls rest quietly on tree branches. They pull their necks into their shoulders and are hard to see because many have the same colors as tree branches. If you see one during the day, most of the time it is sleeping. Woody was considered very strange. He grew up among owls. He was not the normal lively woodpecker. As a result, the rabbits, squirrels, monkeys and turtles called Woody “Weird Woody.” While most woodpeckers attended bird meetings held by groups concerned about the disappearing forest, Woody always helped weak newborn chicks. Woody had a red patch over his very long bill and white circles around both eyes. I guess you could say some of Bertie’s owlish features rubbed off on him. He looked like an owl. He brought worms, and nursed babies while the mothers went looking for food. Woody vowed that as long as he lived he would dedicate his life to saving birds from crawling snakes and lizards.

Last spring some men with heavy machines started cutting down the trees in the forest. They did this all spring through the summer. It was difficult for Woody to sleep because he usually sleeps during the day and stays awake at night warning new cubs and their mothers of impending dangers. Men with long fire sticks that made loud noises (called guns) started shooting rabbits and deer so the snakes started climbing the trees looking for food. Woody noticed them and decided to put a new plan in place to protect the eggs and their young from the birds.

Every day Woody was busy making hollow houses in the tall tree trunks. He liked coconut trees because their branches were always up. This caused great difficulty for the snakes originally but something very strange happened. The lizards were determined to find the eggs as well. As they began climbing in search of the birds’ eggs, Woody would bring in larger birds and they would in turn eat the lizards. The few remaining rabbits and squirrels would rejoice every time a large bird catches a lizard.

Somehow snakes figured they would be too big for the average bird to interfere with. In addition, snakes had the added advantage of being able to hunt at night. Woody had a problem. He could not ask the hawks to come to his aid because the hawks might eat him instead. So he thought and thought and thought. Woody decided to pray and ask God for an idea. It was Woody on his knees every day with his wings raised to the sky asking God to give him wisdom to protect the weak birds.

Here is Woody’s prayer:

DEAR GOD, WHO BEAUTIFUL THE TREES,

Who teaches the birds to sing?

It is you who make the moon and the stars shine,

I know I’m just a little woodpecker

But I want to ask you this little thing.

Could you bring your big ears closer to mine?

I don’t want the snakes to hear this prayer.

Please dear God give me an idea

To save the offspring from despair.

Suddenly, Woody started flapping his wings in excitement: I SCREAMED, I SCREAMED AND HE FLYED.

Soon it became impossible to sleep in the forest. The big machines groaned all day. During the night Woody’s beak either imitated the sound of the machines or his beak became one of those machines. BRRRRRRRRRRRZZZZZZZZ Woody went all night. He dug and hollowed out holes in every big coconut tree, big trees with spikes and spikes, baobabs and silk cotton trees too.

Suddenly it went silent. Woody hollowed out trees no more. He helped the finches, the sparrows and the doves. He found safe and secure homes for them. He even volunteered to babysit for many. Then one night a loud scream was heard: GGGGGGGGRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAH. It was Snotty the garden snake. Snotty has been looking pretty skinny lately. When the animals jumped from the other side of the stream (a channel made by the men and their machines) to see what happened, there was Snotty with blood coming from her eyes pushing into trees. The noise attracted a huge eagle. The eagle picked and picked at Snotty until it could tear her into little pieces to feed to her young. Each night a different snake suffered the same fate. Apparently Woody got a wise idea when he was praying. He broke off long thorns from the cactus trees and hid them inside the hollow branches. When the snakes looked in, Woody poked them in the eyes.

Since that day, most snakes have basic or limited vision and focus by moving the lens of the eyes back and forth like a camera. They see better at night and use their sense of smell to find food. Some species such as vine snakes, pythons, and garter snakes now turn their eyes when searching for food. As a result of Woody’s prayer, I believe some snakes were severely punished. These are permanently blind; they burrow through mud looking for worms and hide in the ground.

Moral of the story: you can’t be too small to help someone. Instead of getting into trouble after school, ask your parents if you can help an old lady or man who lives alone. The task could be as simple as bringing in their newspaper, picking up their groceries, or reading a passage of Scripture to them. When you help people who are unable to help themselves, those things go into a big spiritual account. Sometime later in life, when you really need a miracle, just pray like Woody and see what happens. Let Woody’s prayer inspire you and keep you from harm.
