How To Host A Victorian Tea Party Ideas Recipes
A Victorian Tea Party would be the most elegant of all. Everything in Victorian times was done lavishly. So break out your grandmothers china, silver, crystal and service pieces. The fancier the better. Of course if you have a really prized possession that would break your heart if it were damaged, please don’t use it for the party. Accidents happen! Before you prepare your house and prepare your food, you must send out invitations.
INVITATION IDEAS
There are so many options here. With today’s computer programs you can make some beautiful ones at home. Include actual tea bags in the invitation. Maybe make some using paper supplies and scrapbooking supplies.
DECOR & SERVICE
You want to make the house as beautiful as possible. Fresh flowers are a must, use them everywhere. I had a birthday tea at the beginning of June & I put vases of peonies everywhere, they are beautiful. Use traditional vases or teapots that no longer have lids. Sometimes you can find then for a bargain because they no longer have a cover! Use candles both narrow and wide votives or tea lights. I use some of those fancy Christmas lights that are now sold in all sorts of shapes. I have some pretty hearty and some floral and even some dragonfly lights (those are for the fairy tea party – see my fairy tea party page) Play soft music in the background. There are even tea party music CDs you can buy. For tablecloths try lace or damask. Scatter silk rose petals on your table. Use real linens or fancy paper napkins. I found some monogrammed napkins at an antique store in California last year. They were cheap I guess because not too many people have an “O” monogram.
For Serving Pieces You Will Need At Least Some of the Following
Teapot Silver Or China
Sugar and Cream
Salt and Pepper Shakers
Water jug
Various Serving Trays
Tole Tray
Chinese Serving Dishes
Silver Serving Pieces
Crystal Service Pieces
Crystal Plates
Crystal Bowls
silverware
Pedestal Cake Plates
Porcelain or China Teacups
Pretty Plates (mix and match is fine)
Jam or Jelly Serving Jar
Demitasse or Fancy Spoons
You don’t need to spend a lot of money. You can find great bargains at your local thrift stores, flea markets, and antique malls. Mix & Match is a must for teacups and plates. Even mismatched sets are okay. Some I got as gifts, but most are from estate sales or thrift stores. I have at least 24 mix and match cups and saucers.
I love the pedestal cake plates or the tiered pieces. I have several that I bought at the Salvation Army. I bought a vintage Hobnail pie plate for $1. It has a repair on the pedestal part, but I cover with a proper fancy ribbon! Make sure you use lots of scented candles, be creative with your candles. Use paper or a tacky mat under or on top of your serving pieces. Make sure you have a nice glass or crystal on hand for water. Maybe not all of your guests drink tea.
To use for serving sugar or with teacups, or as party favors, be sure to see some of the demitasse spoons I sell. Aren’t they sweet! Tie them to a tea bag with a satin ribbon and you have a darling tea party. If you can find some bargains, give each guest an elegant teacup to take home.
GOOD FOOD TO SERVE
Offer your guests a variety of tea flavors. I leave them in a lined basket. It’s fun to use decorated sugar cubes and sugar tongs too!
TEA SANDWICHES
There are many varieties of tea sandwiches that you can serve. Try to find a firmer bread, cut off the crust and cut sandwiches either diagonally so that you have 2 triangular sandwiches or in 4 for slightly smaller sandwiches. Cucumber sandwiches have long been a tea party tradition. This is an easy one that everyone likes. Just spread softened cream cheese on bread and top with thinly sliced cucumbers. Simple. For an autumn tea or Christmas time try turkey and cranberry sauce sandwiches. Use your favorite egg salad or chicken salad recipe. try adding sliced almonds to your chicken salad recipe, yum! For other fillings you can use, watercress, tomatoes, cheese, sweets, smoked salmon or ham salad. For Kids spread softened cream cheese on bread and top with jelly, cut with a cookie cutter. Spread just a little softened cream cheese on top of the sandwich and dust with sprinkles.
SCONES COOKIES COOKIES & CAKES
You can’t have a Victorian Tea Party without scones. You can find various scone recipes on the internet. I have used scone mixes before as well. If you have a Panera Bakery in your area, they have amazing orange scones. You might like to have traditional Devonshire cream, lemon curd or jelly or jam for your scones and biscuits.
Lemon Curd Recipe:
- 3 eggs
- 1/2 cup fresh lemon juice
- 1/2 cup salted butter
- 1 cup of sugar
Mix together melted butter and sugar. Add well beaten eggs and lemon juice. Place in a double boiler or over boiling water. Stir continuously for 15 minutes or until thick. Leave to cool and refrigerate. Will keep for about 2 weeks.
Traditional Tea Cakes Recipe:
- 4 cups of flour
- 1 cup of butter
- 2 egg yolks, beaten
- milk
- 1 egg white, beaten
- 1/4 cup of sugar
- cumin seeds
Mix all the ingredients together, mix to paste with a little warm milk, cover with a cloth and let stand for about an hour in a warm place. Roll out a slice with a round or shaped knife and bake on a lightly greased or sprayed sheet pan at 350 degrees until golden brown. For other sweets, serve a variety of breads, cakes and cookies. Serve sliced banana bread, shortbread cookies, your favorite holiday cookies, ladyfingers, lemon cookies or crackers, orange cake, peach or strawberry pies or tarts, petit fors, applesauce cake, brownies or porridge, carrot cake, gingerbread or mini cookies.
TEA PARTY THEMES
Need an excuse to have a Victorian Tea Party?? Next time you host a baby or bridal shower, make it a tea party, a birthday party for a friend, Christmas tea is always nice. Host one for your ladies group at church or a women’s Bible study. Celebrate an anniversary, invite your grandmother or granddaughters, let your little girl invite her friends for an elegant day! Combine a tea party with an etiquette class, have a garden tea party in the summer, and of course there’s always Valentine’s Day, my favorite.
