What is the best way to move an angler to entertainment – Answer – Tell him you just heard that his mate caught a Bass where he has been trying for the last 6 months without success. This will probably see him end up in court on a charge of murder with intent to do harm! Bass fishing is the one subject to get the hearts of most sea anglers racing.

Why is it that Bass fishing seems to capture the imagination more than any other fish for most of us? They are abundant around the coast in most areas now that we have become aware of them and are fishing for them like we never did years ago.

On the east coast where I do a lot of my fishing (Aldeburgh/Pakefield area) you can catch schoolies all day in the right conditions along with the chance of a real heavyweight thrown in.

I know fishermen who float for them and catch any amount, up to 25 in a single trip when they are actively feeding! I also know guys who have worked hard and know with a certain precision where and when the Bass will work.

So it’s not because they are scarce or too hard to find but the Bass has a mysterious quality about it and many anglers put it on a pedestal, far above most other species. It was the case that they were scarce because most anglers never went Bass fishing and many Bass were caught more by accident than design, but not anymore.

Is it because they fought like no other fish – I don’t think so. Other species like Mackerel, Mullet, Ekeda fight, don’t they?

Is it because they are different in size, shape or weight, again I think not.

Maybe it’s because there are so many different ways we can use to capture them. You can bottom fish using bait or float fish, use jigs, jelly worms, lures, plugs or poppers to catch Bass. There are many different methods.

The one method that is my preferred technique is using baits and poppers, probably the most difficult methods of all, but that for me is where the answer lies. A lot of practice and a lot of skill go into a Bass fishing using lures and poppers! In addition, a lot of local knowledge about the local habits of the fish is needed. I know that an area is where at a certain time of the tide of a particular height you can set your watch at the Bass that runs down a valley. Now I don’t recommend ‘Catch & Release’, that’s one for the individual but it makes sense that if I continued to take fish from that area, then sooner or later I’ll start to wonder why the Bass aren’t. there further.

One or two places I visit more than likely produce fish, then I’ll put them back unless I want one for the table. I just feel there is no need to kill the golden goose.

Why else would we do it? I know a guy who has been trying to catch Bass for a few years now and hasn’t managed to get a whiff of one, except to admire the ones his fishing buddy catches! He will of course succeed, it’s only a matter of time and I hope that I know when he will, to see the joy and look at his face when it happens.

Why don’t we just throw a rag worm on the end of a flowing trail that we all know takes more than it’s fair share of Bass rather than stand there for maybe session after session throwing bait and not even getting a whiff of a Bass? ?

Working plugs and poppers is a joy in itself. There is something about seeing a popper doing its thing on a flat calm sea, gliding across the surface or watching a plug go under the surface in a clear translucent sea, looking how you believe a bait fish should look!

I still get goosebumps when I go Bass fishing and get hooked on one and almost every angler I talk to feels the same way. It’s not always too good for the heart rate as we get older, believe me! It is the knowledge that you have used the knowledge and skills learned over a period of time that has finally paid off. Of course catch a decent sized Bass on light tackle and the joy quadruples!

Much has been said and written about which plugs, lures or poppers etc are the best but honestly me and my friends have had a lot of fish on a bunch of different lures of one kind or another.

The old saying about many fishing tackles has caught more anglers than it ever did fish comes to mind!
