Reward of Politics

“Who will raise this little child?”

Everyone whispers to each other. The oldest man in the meeting, finally breaking the silence, points to a middle-aged, half-white bearded man and asks him with a lot of boredom on his face and at the same time with a rather suspicious eye about the identity of its parents.

Total serenity and silence quickly grows among the crowd after the old man’s inquiry.

All, regardless of male and female, young and old, remain silent. They look at each other out of pure curiosity.

Suddenly, the miserable mute, almost twenty-two years old, Bidogdho appears in the middle of the meeting.

She has not been able to speak since she was born. Her parents always look out for her. They remain concerned not only about her physical disabilities but also because of her flawless beauty. The wicked young boys of the place often try to seduce her; but cannot dare to go forward. They are only afraid of the eldest son Pothbhrosto of the local influential politician Batpari Mohajon.

Pothbhrosto warned all the wicked boys threatening them that if anyone tried to establish an illicit affair with Bidogdho, they would be beaten and expelled from the place. That is why no one dares to do any harm to her.

Pothbhrosto hit upon an evil plan of molesting Bidogdho much earlier. He is the son of an economically rich and politically powerful family. His father Batpari Mohajon controls the politics of that place. All this place must show respect to him. No one possesses the courage to challenge or challenge him.

Pothbhrosto knows it very well that Bidogdho’s mother Nirupai Banu works as a maid in their house. She comes to their house early in the morning, works hard for hours and leaves in the late afternoon. Sometimes she gets something to eat from their house; otherwise she is hungry all day. Bidogdho stays at home and eagerly waits for his mother to return home.

Pothbhrosto harbors a secret desire to enjoy her for a long period. At the moment he feels losing his control over her. He can no longer bear that he still cannot establish a sexual relationship with Bidogdho.

One morning Nirupai Banu falls ill suddenly. She faints and loses her senses several times. At present her health is not strong enough to continue hard work. But she doesn’t have any alternative without working like a machine. Her health is breaking down.

Hearing this from a little boy Choton from their neighbors, Pothbhrosto, accompanied by his two friends, rushes up to reach the house of the unfortunate maid and manages to send her to the local hospital. Bidogdho now stays at home alone. She cries a lot loudly for her mother.

Her mother Nirupai Banu is the only person on this earth who takes care of her. Her father Amulla Sarkar had given up the ghost a decade earlier. She has no other brother or sister. Their miseries might close here; but no. Her paternal uncles Khadok Shanda and Petuk Panda and their sons forced Nirupai Banu and Bidogdho to leave their home and property. They drove them out and seized their house and land.

That’s why they shelter here like a slum dweller in these government allotted, tin-shaded, tiny and miserable houses. Their house is almost half a kilometer away from Pothbhrosto’s house.

Pothbhrosto comes and enters Bidogdho’s room quickly. Finding her alone crying in the room, he closes the door as quickly as possible. Seeing him close the door, she tries to make her usual voice expressing to know what he wants to get from her. Stopped by him, she is arrested by utmost fear and panic. Pothbhrosto feels excessively excited; he trembles; he can’t breathe normally now; rather he assumes long breaths!

He is now not ready to waste even a little time to fulfill his lust by raping this helpless miserable but fully blossoming virgin. Bidogdho tries to open the door so that she can escape from that lecherous devil. But fate is not at all ready to smile on her.

“Lie on the bed,” Pothbhrosto tries to make her understand with gestures, but she firmly refuses to answer him. She moves her head expressing negation.

Pothbhrosto takes off his clothes quickly and looks out in a most pensive mood through the broken window to see if anyone is present there. His evil spirits leap with ecstatic joy to find no one present there.

Bidogdho growls softly on the bed as her mouth is held close to a strong piece of cloth. Pothbhrosto, after raping her for about half an hour, thinks himself to be one of the most influential conquerors in this world. He is about to leave the place safely. But alas! That little boy appears there through the broken window.

“Get out, scoundrel,” Pothbhrosto becomes terribly angry with him.

“I won’t leave until I know why she’s bleeding and crying on the bed.”

Telling this to him, Choton runs away quickly to home. He tells his parents about what he saw there.

Pothbhrosto quickly leaves the place and goes straight to the local bazaar “Kheyaghat” where he will meet his friends and seek their assistance if needed.

Choton’s parents rush towards Bidogdho’s house. They scream madly, censuring Pothbhrosto for his devil-like wrongdoing and trying to comfort her. Soon some people gathered on the spot; but no one dares to inform the police.

On the next day Nirupai Banu returns home from the hospital, faints again and again to find his miserable daughter, slaps her forehead as if it would be better if the forehead is gone! People try to pacify her, but all their efforts become futile.

In the meantime, at the request of an unknown person, the police appeared there. They take Bidogdho to a hospital to complete her medical test and file a rape case against Pothbhrosto.

On the other hand Batpari Mohajon tries to manage the police by offering a large amount of bribe. But his efforts end in smoke as the officer-in-charge of the police has a fair and uncompromising reputation for corruption and bribery.

The ever-smiling face of the official in charge turned violently red, he trembles a little thinking about the misfortunes of this distressed raped girl. He tells Batpari Mohajon straight ahead,

“Your son has made a mistake; he must be put in the hands of the law, he can never expect any mercy from me.”

Batpari Mohajon returns home in a gloomy and pensive mood. He is quite at a loss as to what to do; how will he save the life of his wicked son. He will be hanged if his guilt is proven before the court. Mohajon cannot even eat and sleep properly; he fell into sickness and his health broke down.

Five months pass. On the other hand, Bidogdho becomes pregnant; Mohajon tried his level best to convince Nirupai Banu to compromise the matter. He offered her a huge sum of money, asks her several times for an abortion. But his no effort sees the light of success. Thinking about all these uncomfortable things, Mohajon is about to die.

Having found no other way, Batpari Mohajon is now looking at the next election. If the current regime changes through the election, his supporting party will take office. He hopes that he will somehow manage the administration to free his son. The newly elected government comes into power after the election is held six months later.

Meanwhile, Bidogdho gives birth to a sweet baby; call it Bidrohi (rebel) in the hope that one day that little Bidrohi will grow old and take the revenge of the oppressions bestowed upon them.

Batpari’s hopes and efforts, at length, become fulfilled and he feels as much relieved as a debt-stricken poor landless farmer feels after being relieved of his debt. His party contributes a lot to save his son’s life. The ministry of internal affairs issues an order to the local police station to discharge Pothbhrosto’s case as if it was such a case that was filed against him to suppress him politically.

The rape case against Pothbhrosto was dismissed!

Pothbhrosto returns home from an unknown place after almost a year. Many people gathered in the courtyard of their house. Some young boys have been waiting for him since this morning holding a bouquet of flowers in their hands. They feel excited to receive him and without any delay they make Pothbhrosto wear the garland!

Pothbhrosto smiles as if he were as great a conqueror as Alexander the great was!

His parents cry silently, placing their lovingly blended kisses on his face and forehead repeatedly. Pothbhrosto hugs and assures them that no one on this earth can do any mischief to them. The other men and women observe and think seriously; how powerful they are! How effectually the mighty hands of politics raised their support to them! They become speechless for a while thinking about the rewards of politics!

Some people were also present in front of the hut of Nirupai Banu and Bidogdho. They are not strong enough to protest against this sheer injustice; they remain silent; some lose their control to stop their eyes from shedding tears. Their faces are like faded and torn leaves of trees in winter. Before leaving the cabin, they utter only a sentence out of their utter grief and exhaustion; but from their firm belief that one day Allah will punish those guilty.
