Baby Photos: What Milestones To Capture During Your Baby’s First Year?
It goes without saying that life passes in the blink of an eye. This is especially true when you have children. One minute you’re biting their toes and the next you’re holding back tears as you drop them off at their first day of school.
Your baby’s first year if full of can’t miss moments that must be captured, saved, printed, stored, shared and liked!
I have been a photographer for 13 years and here are my personal tips for capturing the exciting first year!
Motherhood: The journey begins!
I will offer a maternity photo here because this is where the journey begins. Hearing the heartbeat for the first time, the movement, the kick, and seeing them for the first time during your first appointment for an ultrasound (sonogram).
Some do not feel comfortable taking photos during their pregnancy but trust the photographer. They will make you feel good and look beautiful! You will look great! After all, you are glowing!
Take photos when you feel the most comfortable, most like their photos around 32 weeks or 7 months.
Newborn: So sleepy and tiny!
The best time to capture newborn photos would be 2 weeks ago. At this stage they are so small and so sleepy! You can take newborn photos at 4 weeks, but they are more prone to waking up when presenting them and they are also a bit bigger.
Before 2 weeks, because they are very sleepy, you can introduce them in different ways without disturbing their sleep too much. They can be on their belly, back, side and they could be placed in anything like a basket, toy box, and wagon!
At this stage they may be a little scratchy (keep gloves on them to protect their face), maybe a little jaundiced and have a few pimples. Don’t worry! The photographer must correct these blemishes.
Newborn photos are a must to remember this little stage that passes very quickly!
3 or 4 months: Tomb time and head balance!
This is, perhaps, where you will see the most changes during the first year.
They have grown a lot since the newborn photos. They smile more often, maybe have some hair, and they probably look like you so far. But they don’t do much besides being on their backs and a few seconds of tummy time. The head balance should also be full strength!
Photos at this point show a great contrast in your baby’s physical changes. You will be holding your baby a lot at this stage as they cannot sit up on their own yet. They will be lying on their backs and maybe a few photos with them holding their heads up!
6 or 7 months: Sitting laughing and smiling!
This is my FAVORITE STAGE! At this point, they interact and smile a little more. They sit up, they grab things, bite things and laugh the sweetest!
I love to capture the 6-7 month pictures while the baby is on a big bed or a quiet blanket outside. They sit well, but sometimes that head is too big and they tiiiiiimer. So cute!
At this point, tummy time is no longer torture for them, so they can last a little longer. Oh! And don’t forget to snap a few pictures of them nibbling on their toes while on their backs.
Enjoy the nice overload during this stage.
1 year: Standing, moving and smashing cakes!
Here we are! That first year flew by! This is the movement stage where they have developed a way to get from point A to point B. Whether it is crawling, rocking, rolling or walking.
Dress them up in their Sunday best, give them lots of hugs and kisses, maybe some cake, and enjoy the memories of their first birthday!
I hope this helps you when planning photos during your baby’s first year!
