Baby Care – Cord Care

One thing my daughter was worried about after she had her baby was worrying about the umbilical cord. Many new parents worry about this and wonder how to take care of it. Therefore, in this post, we will tell you how to take care of this, but before we do, let’s go over a few things. Once your baby has arrived, the Doctor or Midwife will clamp the umbilical cord and then cut it leaving a stump about 3cm long. After a few days when this has dried and sealed, this clamp will be removed, and after about 7 or 8 days this should fall off after turning black and shrinking, leaving a small wound that will heal and become your baby’s umbilical cord. .

Cord Care:

What is very important in cord care is to keep the cord clean and dry thus preventing infection. You can do this by top and tail baby or bathing. Many parents worry about the cord stump getting wet, but it is safe, just dry the stump VERY GENTLELY with a soft dry clean towel. What is advisable is to let the cord dry before putting on the baby’s diaper. Please don’t let the baby get cold while you do this, dress the top half of the baby and keep warm until it’s time to put the diaper on, then continue to dress and wrap your baby. Years ago, when I had my babies, we were advised to use cotton and some antiseptic on the cord stump; however, this is not a common practice now. Remember, if at all worried; discuss your concerns with your Doctor or Midwife.

Next, we need to discuss cord care when changing a baby’s diaper:

At all costs, you must not let the string get urine from feces on it. If you are using a disposable diaper specially made for newborns, one way is to tuck the top of the diaper under the cord. My daughter and her husband did this, and it was very effective. When it comes time to change a baby’s diaper, a little cord care tip from my daughter; cover the cord with a tissue and then a wipe (the disposable wipes you buy to clean baby at a wipe change) before undoing the wipe; change the diaper making sure you clean and cream well. Then after the clean diaper is on, fold the top down, and remove the tissue and wipe. Don’t panic if for some reason the string does get some urine or feces on it; it’s not the end of the world! Using a little baby wash that is PH neutral, clean the area thoroughly and let it dry.

2 more things that are most important in the care of cords, they may seem obvious, but they are very important:

-Let the stump fall off naturally, don’t pull it.

-Wash Your Hands before, after changing a diaper, and before touching the cord. Another tip is when you have washed and dried your hands, spray some hand sanitizer and massage into your hands, then you know they are really clean. You can buy this hand sanitizer in various sizes, but the most economical is a large bottle with a pump. From this, you fill pocket bottles to take with you when you go out with your baby, so that you always have clean hands during handling.

Now I know one burning question you will be asking is “how long will it take for the cord stump to heal completely?” the answer to that is about 10 days. Sometimes you may see some blood on the diaper from this area, but don’t panic, this is completely normal. Please remember, if you are at all worried about your baby’s cord, if it becomes a bit weepy or smelly or baby appears unwell, contact your Doctor immediately. See you next time.
