How to Raise a Healthy Puppy – My Rottweiler Puppy
Raising a rottweiler puppy can be much different than raising any other breed of dog. Just like having a baby, you need to be mindful of your rotten puppy. Make sure you don’t leave them alone for long periods of time as they will panic and start crying for you.
I wasn’t ready for my puppy to be honest. I got her from a guy I met on Craigslist for a decent price. She is a German Rottweiler, she was only 6 weeks old, and I named her, Xena B. Johnson. The “B” stood for “Bear” because she looked like a little bear cub with her short tail.
I don’t really know why clipping the rottweiler’s tail became so popular, but I always thought it looked pretty cool. The short tail makes my dog look different and more unique than the other breeds to me and that alone makes her special. Her black and mahogany coat is so beautiful. I love the velvety feel and shine that this coat had naturally.
The first thing I did after leaving the breeder was pick up my girlfriend from work. Of course she had no idea I got a puppy, but we were talking about getting one and she wanted me to check out the rottweiler puppies that this particular breeder had. So, you can probably imagine the surprised look she had on her face when she opened the door and saw Xena sitting in her chair. It was so funny because she was talking to a co-worker while she was getting into the car, so she never really looked into the car until right before she was seated.
Anyway, after the hugs and kisses, and I love you’s, we took Xena to PetSmart to get some pet supplies. Like I said earlier, I wasn’t ready for a puppy. I got her a bed to lay on, some training pads, some dog food and treats (like chicken, beef and cheese bites). I will admit that the PetSmart items are a bit more expensive than the pet supplies you will find at your local Dollar Store, Walmart, HEB, Krogers…etc.
The breeder initially told me that he fed his dogs a cheap brand of dog food because he had so many dogs to feed. I finally chose IAMS Dog food as the choice for my Rottweiler. They have different types of food for different age groups, so all I had to do is get the one for puppies around 6 weeks old, and I got the Smart Puppy IAMS brand because I wanted her to be smart.
I usually go to Walmart, simply because it’s the closest store near me with a decent variety of pet supplies. I spent about $50 a month on food and snacks for my rottweiler puppy. I’m just glad Walmart didn’t decide to add a Pet Hospital inside. I can definitely see a dog getting loose and making it to the McDonald’s or the food aisle. All the customers are going in a panic because some crazy, confused chihuahua is snapping at everyone’s ankles.
Anyway, while I’m at PetSmart, I notice the Banfield Pet Hospital in the back. So, we go check it out and see what they are doing and if they have any plans suitable for our puppy. We ended up enrolling Xena in the wellness plan because we felt we needed to make sure she was as healthy as possible.
The bill wasn’t pretty but I did what I had to do. Also, this is my first puppy. I had a few people tell me how easy it was to give my puppy her shots by myself, but I didn’t want to take any chances.
This was my first puppy, a living liability, and I had to pay for her.
Soooooo… Yes!
I have taken the necessary precautions to ensure the health and livelihood of my pet. Also, this particular PetSmart store had a pet grooming area in the back of the store next to the Banfield Pet Hospital. I made sure I stopped by to see if it was okay to bring my rottweiler puppy sometimes to get ready.
They offer some pretty cool services such as:
-
oral care
-
nail clipping
-
haircut
-
shampoo
-
a bath
I grabbed a business card from the front desk in the grooming salon and went to the front counter to purchase the pet supplies we had collected earlier. One amazing thing we found at the front checkout was a Puppy Start Up Kit. I couldn’t believe that someone would do something so precious for a new dog owner like me. It was like God led us to that store.
The Puppy Start Up Kit featured coupons for:
-
pet food
-
beds
-
cages
-
snacks
-
toys
-
Pet Training Lessons (also on PetSmart)
-
Banfield Pet Hospital visits
-
Pet Grooming Salon visits
I believe the first 2 visits to the grooming salon were $10 each. That’s an amazing price to get your pup clean and smelling fresh. Not to say I’m all in my puppy’s face or anything. I personally don’t kiss my dog, but I know some people who do. I just choose to show my love and affection in a different way.
Xena was indeed the most beautiful Rottweiler puppy I have ever seen in my entire life. In fact, she was the cutest puppy ever, hands down. All she needed was a little bandana or bow or ribbon or something nicer that people put on their puppies to win the dog contests.
After checkout, we headed back home to introduce Xena to her new home. She was scared and nervous at first because everything was new to her. She used to be surrounded by Rottweiler dogs and her birth parents. We fed her that night and let her explore the bedroom. Obviously, you have to be careful with puppies because they can’t hold their bladders for a long time yet. After she fell asleep, we fell asleep.
Sweet Dreams and God Bless
