15 Point Decluttering Checklist – Do a Serious Decluttering and Organizing Job Around the House!
Many people experience during a certain time of year the urge to do some serious decluttering. Maybe they want to start fresh before a new season begins, or maybe an event happens that sparks that longing for a tidy, messy house. Whatever their reasons, they know they need to get busy with some serious decluttering and organizing work around the house.
For most people, the best results happen if they follow some sort of plan for their decluttering and organizing work. Many people work well with checklists, so here’s a 15-point decluttering checklist. Start with these and then take it from there!
- Sort invoices and file appropriately in a file or other organized system.
- Discard (recycle) all outdated flyers and catalogs.
- Get rid of outdated photos and cards received from acquaintances that cover your bulletin board and/or refrigerator. They won’t notice.
- Sort through closet and bag clothes that haven’t been worn in the past 2 years. Donate to charity or sell at a consignment shop if still in decent shape.
- Clean out board game closet – keep only games you know you will actually PLAY.
- Dispose of medications that have passed their expiration date.
- Sort through toy box and separate pieces that belong to each playset (1 bin for lego, 1 bin for crayons, 1 bin for toy cars, etc.)
- Box up seasonal clothes, shoes and items – put in storage.
- Empty junk drawer of all items, replace only “necessary items”, and delete the rest.
- Limit the knacks on your display shelves to “half” of what you currently have.
- Remove all random tools from the drawer and get rid of the ones you never use.
- Raid your shoe closet! How many pairs of black dress shoes do you need?
- Sort linens and towels and get rid of old sets you never use.
- Throw away old or incorrectly colored makeup that you never use.
- Sort through jewelry looking for broken items or pieces you don’t wear or don’t like. Sell or dispose of them.
A checklist for decluttering and organizing work like the one above is just a place to start. Decluttering and organizing your house will definitely be a challenge. But, if you put in the effort and just get to work taking items out of your control, you’ll be surprised how great your house starts to look!
