Let’s Throw a Party!
The words, ‘let’s throw a party’ are enough to make us all smile. After all, everyone loves a party, right? Certainly as a child the thought of going to someone’s party was exciting, if perhaps filled with some anticipatory nerves.
Back in the day children’s parties were pretty simple affairs. You showed up, played pass the bag, musical chairs, ate salmon pasty sandwiches, downed lashings of jelly and ice cream and then left with a goody bag containing a balloon, a coloring book, a plastic toy and a few penny chews.
These days children’s parties have gone up a level or two. They are now big business, with parents agonizing for weeks over the right type of party to maintain their beloved child’s status. There is often an underlying concern about their child conforming, learning what is expected, connecting with the “right” kids.
Granted, many parents both work, have had to deal with their divorce or have evolved into nuclear families. These factors can make it a bit complicated to organize a party at home and besides, who has the time or inclination to deal with the mess!
Gone are the days of fish fingers and mini burgers at the local coffee shop. As levels of sophistication rise you are much more likely to find themed parties at the local football club, ice rink, petting zoo or farm, with face painting, magicians, tractor rides and baby animals in the mix.
Young teenagers expect themed discos, make your own pizza or karting competitions with any travel requirements provided by stretch limos or fancy buses. They like mocktail mixing classes, makeup and fancy clothes.
Coming of age parties have also become more sophisticated. Yes, you might find the occasional barn dance or chess game with meat and potato pie next, but the invitation is often accompanied by costume requirements, so the fringe jacket, cowboy hat, gingham shirt and boots are all requested to make an appearance.
Throwing a grown-up party can sometimes require the services of a party planner if things start to escalate. In lavish cases ice sculptures, table dancers, acrobats, “naked butlers”, photo booths, choreographed dance routines for guests and acts flown in from abroad are provided to ensure a good night by all.
Much more common, however, are specially themed evenings, such as cooking parties, cocktail making, elegant parties with Star Wars, James Bond or a specific decade being presented. Save the date cards can be sent in advance. Printers, florists, makeup artists, caterers and costume designers are all on speed dial, as are the venues who are expected to dress up the event and provide gifts for guests at every table.
But what about other less extravagant ways to ensure a great party experience? I know people who, after buying their new home, provided paint and asked friends to come over and write messages or graffiti on their bare walls. Afterwards, everyone ate a hot pot dinner while laughing at their handiwork, the walls providing long-lasting acknowledgment of those friendships.
Or a safari dinner, where everyone who lives nearby cooks a course and the dinner moves from one house to another throughout the meal, ensuring less individual expense and a fun, varied evening.
I have been booked for “WeTalk” parties where the host or hostess provides drinks and snacks and I present topics for discussion, allowing guests the opportunity to talk about important, moving issues, share ideas and come away feeling they had a good time. , involving time with the benefit of some added mini-therapy.
For me, on my last two birthdays I invited family and friends to a sit-down dinner, the last one with ‘George Michael’ providing the entertainment. It was a lot of fun with lots of positive feedback, so much so that I was tempted to do it again the following year, rather than wait another ten years. That was until I realized how quickly a year goes by. Repeating something too soon or too often can reduce the excitement, perhaps making something special quite tiring.
Are the best parties so good because they happen infrequently? Are we in danger of getting into a “how will I/they improve on last year” mindset, where everything becomes pressured and competitive? Also, are parties becoming more about the venue than the occasion, more about the paraphernalia than the people and relationships?
Remember those old-fashioned parties where everyone gravitated to the kitchen, drinking beer and mulled wine, rocking the odd sausage roll or cheese and pineapple on a stick! Everyone had a lot of fun.
Have we lost the essence of what parties are, the reasons why we enjoy them? The important motivating factor must be a desire to get together and celebrate, while taking the pressure off the host(s) so they can enjoy them too. While your life may not always be a party, your party sure should be!
