Chicago the Musical – It’s Time For Jazz Hands!

This musical was written by John Kander and Fred Ebb who wrote the music and lyrics respectively, perhaps most famous for their musical Cabaret (1966) which went on to become a classic film starring Liza Minelli.

The plot of Chicago is based around the satire and corruption in the American criminal justice system, focusing on the phenomenon of the celebrity criminal. Reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins was a reporter who worked for the Chicago Tribune and went on to write a play about her experiences there. Originally choreographed by the legend Bob Fosse, the musical made its debut on June 3, 1975 on Broadway at the 46th Street Theatre.

The musical stars Velma Kelly, a vaudeville performer and murderer who slaughters her ex-boyfriend and sister after finding them in a compromising situation. She is later thrown into prison for her crime of passion. Meanwhile, Roxie Hart, another vaudevillian villain kills her lover Fred Casely. New crimes begin that take the heat off the locked up ladies. Roxie is cleared of her crime in court thanks to Billy but the press is on to pastures new and her release is forgotten. Roxie confesses to Amos that she was never a baby which makes him leave her in the end. Velma and Roxie team up to do a new act, forever pursuing their idea of ​​fame.
