Las Vegas on a Budget From Britain – Is It Really Possible?

Las Vegas is 10 hours away from the UK, so it’s not the cheapest of places to visit, the flight alone can set you back a large part of your budget, but if you put in your research you can get there and enjoy all Vegas has to offer without breaking the bank. Here are some useful tips on how to make your budget go further.

When to go

Pick your time of year to visit. November to February, excluding all the obvious holidays, is the cheapest time to visit Las Vegas as it’s out of season. The weather is cooler, especially in the evening, but it can still get up to 70 degrees, warmer than some of our summer months! If you’re going to Vegas chances are it’s to try some of the other entertainment on offer rather than sunbathing so it won’t matter too much.

The day of the week you go is important too. The vast majority of visitors to Vegas are Americans who jet in for long weekends, so hotel prices are at a premium on Friday and Saturday nights. If you’re only going for 4 or 5 nights try and avoid the weekend.

How to get there

Whilst a direct flight is the preferred option, these are often more expensive than a one-stop flight, particularly if you’re flying from a regional airport rather than one of the London ones. So if you’re not in a rush, check out the prices of flights via other American cities. We once got an extra 24 hours in Atlanta courtesy of the airline due to a missed connection!

Where to stay

Las Vegas has a over 100,000 hotel rooms so you should be able to find one that fits your budget. Off-Strip hotels can be cheaper, however, what you save on the hotel bill you could end up spending on transport to The Strip, where most of the action is. Hotels in the Freemont Street, Old Town area are also slightly cheaper and there’s plenty to do in that area. But if you want to stay on The Strip there are plenty of options to experience a big resort with all of it’s facilities for a low price. For example, booking several months in advance for mid-week stays in December you can pick up stays in Stratosphere, Harrah’s, Excalibur, Flamingo and Circus Circus for around £20 a night. Flamingo and Harrah’s in particular are some of the best located hotels on the strip occupying centre strip locations. All of them are at least 3* rated hotels and have all the facilities you’d expect of a big hotel resort along with their own casinos. Beware the resort fee though. This is a non-negotiable fee of anything up to £20 per room per night that’s added on to your bill and covers such things as in-room wi-fi.

What to do

Chances are you’re going to Vegas to gamble. The On-Strip casinos can be expensive as they have higher table limits, usually $10 a hand so if you want to play the tables look out for happy hours, usually during the day time, visit the smaller casinos and those belonging to the lower budget hotels, off Strip casinos and also those in Freemont Street where limits are lower. If you’re good at poker then a poker tournament can be good value for money as for a buy in fee you can be playing for several hours.

If you’re in Vegas to party then be prepared to spend some serious money! Just to get in to some of the trendiest clubs can cost you around $30 each and once inside the drinks can be expensive. Look out for offers on the quieter nights of the week that give you entrance and a drinks package. Even in the bars on the casino floors a bottle of beer can be at least $6 plus a tip. If you want to have a drink but aren’t bothered about the clubs and bars then the best option is to get served while you’re gambling as the drinks are free! Yep, for the price of a $1 per drink tip (or less if you prefer but this usually guarantees you get served again) you can drink whatever you like from beers and wine to cocktails for free. There is a catch of course, as this only applies if you’re spending money on gambling which can end up being a lot more expensive than a drink. But if you’re planning on gambling anyway it’s a good way of combining both activities; playing the low limit slot machines slowly while having a drink is relatively cheap, but don’t get carried away on the gambling front after a few drinks!

If you like your food then Vegas won’t disappoint. As well as the high-end, celebrity chef restaurants Vegas is also the home of the “eat as much as you like” buffet. Most of the hotels offer them for breakfast and lunch. For a one off amount you really can eat as much as you like, or should that be can, and the range of food on offer means there’s something for everyone’s taste. Again try one of the cheaper hotels such as Excalibur who offer lunch buffet for around $17. If you don’t fancy quite that much to eat, The Pub in the Monte Carlo offers $1 sliders (mini burgers) and $1 wings, plus buy one get one free on draught beer during weekday happy hours. Note: prices are correct at time of writing.

A note to remember on food and drink in Vegas, is that the price is usually quoted before the sales tax of 8.1%, so don’t be surprised when the bill arrives and it’s more than you were expecting. In addition, tipping of between 15-20% in restaurants is expected, not just for good service but just as part of the cost. If you want to avoid the tipping go to one of the many fast food restaurants and food courts inside the hotels.

These are just a few easy tips for making your budget go further when you’re planning your trip to Las Vegas. If you make these savings then you’ll have more to enjoy yourself with when you’re there!
