Moral of the story, never leave home without a diaper ready. You never know what you’ll meet, even if you’re just going for a short trip or a short errand. Sometimes those can turn into longer trips than you expected and you always want to be prepared. You should at least have an extra set of clothes and some diapers and wipes with you at all times. Even if you don’t have a full on diaper, you at least need the diapers and the change of clothes otherwise this could happen to you.

Some people call it an emergency bag, it contains all the essentials, even if it’s not the prettiest. It will have a change of clothes, diapers, wipes, and maybe a snack or two. If my friend had an emergency bag in her van then this wouldn’t have happened to her.

It was early November and the weather was cool but not yet cold. I needed a new outfit for a job interview I had the next morning. Without thinking, I bundled the baby up, put her in her car seat and headed out the door to the mall where I planned to quickly pick up an outfit for the upcoming events.

While in the car, I heard familiar noises coming from the back seat. I know all the parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters, cousins, etc. know the noise well… and for those of you who don’t know the noise, the smell is one no one can forget!

Undeterred, I confidently pulled into the parking lot with the intention of changing my 6-month-old daughter in the store bathroom on one of those not-so-sanitized changing tables.

As I pulled her out of the car seat, my nose filled with a foul smelling aroma, but I still didn’t panic, if anything I was just distracted by the smell. After noticing that her clothes were a little wet from the explosion, I quickly moved my hand to the other side of her bottom and started frantically groping around the back seat for the diaper. However, if you remember I ‘swaddled the baby, put her in her car seat and sped out the door to the mall.’ No where in that sentence will you find, “grabbed a diaper…” So as you can imagine, I’m frantically looking for extra clothes and a diaper in my car, but can’t come up with anything because I’m not that organized. even left the diaper bag at home!

It is at this point that I am both frustrated and mortified that not only did I forget the diaper, but now I have driven 15 miles away from my home and have to take my 6 month old baby into a store with a strong smell. and stained clothes all because I am unprepared.

I quickly stumble into the store with a crying dirty child to the baby section. This is of course a detour around the womenswear as I now have a crisis on my hands. I shuffle through a rack of baby pajamas, grab a small box of diapers and a case of wipes and go to the counter to pay. Smiling reluctantly at the understanding clerk I rush to the bathroom and change my uncomfortable child. After putting her dirty clothes in a bag and placing them with my new purchase of diapers and wipes I quickly exit the store…embarrassed.

I place my child’s blanket on the wet part of the car seat and lay her down to strap her securely in place. I then head back home, completely forgetting the reason for my trip in the first place. So the moral of the story is: take a prepared diaper with you whenever you leave your home. The time you forget the diaper, even if it’s for a short trip, will be the time you need it the most! Remember this story if you are ever caught unprepared with a dirty diaper on your hands.

Oh and by the way, I didn’t get the job…maybe if I was less worried about my own stupidity in forgetting the diaper at home and came more prepared easily able to quickly change my toddler, I could have been. was more focused on the real reason for my trip… finding a nice outfit for the job interview! Lesson learned!
