3 Tips For Getting Your Baby to Sleep Through the Night
Having trouble getting your baby to sleep through the night is very common. In fact this is due to our problems with having to listen to our babies cry, rather than the child’s problems with sleep.
When your baby is born, there is an instant bond and the desire to protect them at all costs. We, as mothers, see the crying as a sign that the baby needs something, which is true, so when the baby cries we run to them to ‘fix’ their need. The problem is that when they are tired and we go to them quietly, we are actually preventing them from getting the sleep they need.
So first you have to reprogram yourself as a mother to provide your baby with the sleep they need and that means letting them cry a little.
So having said all that, here are our top 3 tips to guarantee your baby sleep through the night…
1) Keep a routine – put your baby down in the same place and keep the same routine, as in what you do and what you say, ie night at night, sleep well, see you soon etc…
2) Provide them with things they can use as their “security blanket” – children usually choose their own security blanket/muslin/plush, but we can help them by putting something in their bed that is always there. I used muslin because it was easy to replace and easy to transport, but you can use whatever you think is best or pretty, as long as it’s safe for babies. Make this part of the routine, giving his teddy or whatever you chose. (Always try to change these items every time so you don’t have problems if it gets lost or damaged)
3) Don’t worry about noise outside their room/sleeping space – keeping the noise down when baby is sleeping is bad because if there is noise then the baby can be woken up with a start and can even get scared. So in theory you should be able to pass the hoover outside the baby’s door without waking them. This means that not only can you get on with your life when your baby has fallen asleep, but you also don’t have to worry about other children making noise or having friends and family over.
Remember that newborn babies need frequent feedings and sleeping through the night may not be possible until the baby is three months old or later. Some babies start sleeping only through the night at one year. Once your baby is no longer waking for feedings, these three tips will ensure you and your baby a restful night’s sleep. These tips will work though to get your baby to sleep at night even before they are ready to go the whole night without feeding. If they wake up for a meal, repeat the three steps when they finish and they go right back.
