5 Lessons From Eddie Murphy’s Daddy Day Care That Fathers Can And Should Implement Immediately
It’s amazing how young kids can find an older movie that you might have forgotten about, decide they like it, and play it over and over and over.
My five-year-old son did just that with Eddie Murphy’s Daddy Day Care. What’s really interesting is that when I first saw this movie, I was looking at it through the eyes of a man without children. OH BUT NOT THIS TIME.
Now every time I watch this movie with my son, which is at least twice a week since the time I write this. I capture the underlying messages of the film that really motivate me as a Father and Entrepreneur
So I took the time to explain Eddy Murphy’s 5 Lessons From Dad’s Day Care That Dads Can And Should Implement Immediately.
The Falsehood Of Corporate Security
Eddie Murphy’s character in this film had a very important and time-consuming career product development. He routinely answered the call of his cell phone, and the endless rings of e-mail. Most men who have worked in the corporate world can relate to this.
But then IT occurs (insert movie horror soundtrack). He and his very good friend are fired in a way that shocks Charlie (The character of Eddie) and his business partner Phil. Have any of you experienced this before? (The writer of this post raises his hand).
Charlie must immediately accept the reality that his employer had the power to stop the work in which he found his identity. And it didn’t matter how much he was emotionally invested. It didn’t matter what his financial obligations were. And it didn’t even matter that he had brought the company success in the past. So what’s next?
What Really Matters
All of Charlie’s time was no longer occupied by meetings, presentations, emails and phone calls. So what is he doing now? Well isn’t it obvious by the title? He returned to being Dad. He started reading to his son at night, and even fell asleep in bed with him. (And the crowd goes AWWWW!!)
Now since this wasn’t the end of the movie, the importance of this quality time hadn’t really hit him yet. But it helped him shift his focus to home.
The Joy Of Being Present
So the Daddy’s Charlie and Phil decide to start the hilarious task of starting a Daddy Day Care. In which both their children are present.
With a mix of lots of poop humor, costume play, sugar rushes, and sugar crashes, and of course NAP TIME. The Dad’s Day Care is formed Now remember the scene I talked about earlier where Charlie was reading and lulling his son to sleep. Well because of Charlie’s decision to start this home business, he and his son got a lot more time together.
Side Bar: This is one of those points where the film really started to speak to my own desires as a Father and an entrepreneur.
Charlie went from being an absentee Father due to his career, to being a present and engaged Father due to a business decision. Which brings me to the next and very valuable point.
Since this is a family based comedy, a lot of hilarity ensues, along with the challenges of two very inexperienced men running a nursery, competing with the big time private academy in town.
During their journey they encounter surprise inspections, sabotage, and Charlie is even faced with the very difficult choice of going back to his old job.
Side Bar: To me this represents the struggle that many men go through every day when they leave their home and children.
But something amazing happens when he briefly decides to go back to the corporate world and leave his innovative Dad’s Day Care. While he was in the boardroom, urged to make a presentation by the same man who fired him not long ago.
IT finally hits him in the head. The realization that the quality time he was able to spend with his son was so priceless that he suddenly excused himself, and quickly went to pick up his son from the dreaded Academy he was competing against. And did the GRACIOUS statement that Dad’s Day Care was here to stay.
What You Can Know About Your Children
As I watch this movie over and over again. I look at my son at the same time. I watch what parts of the movie make him laugh, and realize that I laugh at the same parts. I notice that he is attracted to this movie more than other more popular animated movies. I then realize that he already has the desire to be a Dad when he grows up, and this movie speaks to a deep desire inside of him.
And guess what… Me too when I was his age. Watching my son learn and grow highlights my own attributes that I am responsible for developing or correcting in him.
My son has such an amazing influence on how I go about my career, and how I’ve come to understand the value of time. I am so thankful that he was tough enough to put up with my days of being an absent Father due to career choices. Yet loving enough to forget about my absence the moment I came home. (Pauses to catch your breath and not cry)
I hope this post encourages another Father to decide that those he cares about most also deserve more of his time than anything else.
