Six Types of Human Values
People need different things to live in this world. However, nothing in this world is available for free. Everything has a price and one has to pay the right price to satisfy the need. However, we value things based on our needs and the needs depend on our value system.
First, there are basic necessities such as food, water, air, shelter and clothing, without which the survival of the body itself is not possible. However, once these needs are satisfied, the person moves to satisfy his higher needs such as the social needs, security needs or the need for self-actualization.
However, every person does not follow the same path, because his path would depend on the inherent values of the person. These inherent values are acquired by man by his nature and also by his nurture. The impact of the family, society, nation and individual makes each person unique as he develops a unique set of values. These values decide the priority and lifestyle of the person. The values make the personality of the person and decide the growth of the individual, family, society, nation and humanity.
1. Individualistic Values
A person’s most inherent value is individualistic, which means valuing the self above anything else in the world. This is also the most natural value that is inherent in every animal of the world. The animals live for themselves without disturbing the other animals much. The only exception would be the mother animal who takes care of her baby animal until the child grows old enough to support itself.
The modern world has moved more and more towards individualistic values where the interest of the individual is considered to be the most “right” and must be protected above all else. The individualistic value supports freedom because it believes that each person has the right to decide what is good for him.
Every child starts with individualistic values and he wants everything in the world for himself and wants everyone to serve him. When the child’s need is not satisfied, he cries and does everything to satisfy the need.
2. Family Values
The human species may be the most powerful species on earth but it is also true that the human species is also the weakest species. A human child doesn’t even learn to walk for a year. If the man’s child is allowed to survive on its own, it simply cannot survive. The support of family is necessary for the growth of every human child. It is for this reason that the human species over the years invented the concept of a family that lives as one unit and supports a newborn child until it becomes strong enough to support itself.
The concept of family gave rise to the family value where family is considered to be the basic unit of society instead of the individual. The family has the right and power to control the other member of the family. In a family system, the members of the family divide their work in such a way that all members perform complementary functions rather than performing the same functions. For example, a father earns a living and protects the family by being the strongest member of the family. The mother takes care of the family by cooking food, cleaning house and raising children. The children on their part receive these benefits free of charge from their parents but they have the family obligation to provide the same benefits to their children. Thus the family ensures the continuity of the value and tradition of the family.
In the family system, the interest of each member of the family is protected through an unwritten law because love and trust alone govern the management of a family. The parents are not looking for any personal gain when they give something to their children. The children also recognize the contributions made by the parents in the construction of their life and they not only pass on the same benefits to their own children, but also take care of their parents when they grow old.
The whole system of family value is preserved by tradition and faith.
However, when family values are strong, it results in the reduction of individual freedom and a decline in individual values. Every person must think for the family first and the self as secondary. This often kills the man’s creativity because he is never free to think as an individual.
3. Professional Values
Society is made of not only families that are natural but also of origin that are artificially created to fulfill a specific demand of society. The government is one of the most important organizations that were created to bring order in society. The government is further divided into different departments like police, revenue, defense etc. which are necessary to keep the country united and protect it from external aggression. There are many other organizations that are run by private individuals or bodies that produce goods and provide service to the people of the nation and the world.
Every person must adhere to an origin to earn their livelihood and contribute to society. These organizations are designed to serve a specialized function of society and thus need a set of values to keep all members of the organization motivated and united.
Thus the person develops a set of values because of his profession. The values of a police officer are different than the values of a judge or a politician. Each profession has its own set of values that often contradict the values of another profession. However, these values are necessary to keep the professionals united and deliver what is expected of them.
4. National Values
The world today is divided into a number of countries and each country is sovereign and independent. However, in recent years the countries have begun to behave like family members, as independence is gradually being replaced by interdependence in the globalized economies. If China is emerging as the manufacturing center of the world, India has become the outsourcing and out-shoring center of the world from where the different services are provided to the world. Arab world produces oil for the world and the United States has taken the leading role in creating the knowledge and the Information Technology for the world. Each country gradually becomes a specialist in some specific task and receives the rest of the requirements fulfilled by the other countries of the world.
Thus, just as individuals and families must compete and complement each other for their survival in society, every nation must compete and complement the other countries of the world. To make the nation stronger, certain types of values must be cultivated in its citizen, which makes the country not made of millions or billions of individuals or families but as one family.
Because of independence, every country develops certain values that continue to evolve over time. The values of a nation represent its tradition, history and experiences of its people since its creation. The values of India and China are many thousands of years old, while the values of the newly created nations such as the United States, Israel, Australia and Pakistan are quite new.
The national values are often codified in its laws, which aim to give equality and justice to all its citizens. There, there is a wide diversity in these laws because the requirement of each country is different. The violation of national values are considered criminal acts, which are punished by the State. Thus the countries with strong national values enforce their laws very strictly, because they keep the interest of the country above the interest of the individual.
5. Moral Values
While the legal values of a country or society are documented and enforced, these are insufficient for the smooth functioning of the state. The ideal state is one where the State does not have to enforce any law because the citizens voluntarily follow the laws of the land. However, this rarely happens because all State laws are drafted by the people who are in power or those who have influence over powerful people. These powerful people ensure that laws are drafted in favor of the few rather than in favor of the masses. Thus over a period of time, the enforcement of laws creates a class of people who are extremely powerful and wealthy while the majority population lives the life of misery and poverty.
However, the inequality and injustice created by law are largely reduced due to the prevalence of moral values in society that do not have to be codified in the statutes. However, moral values are passed down from one generation to another through tradition. For example, the sanctity of the institution of marriage in India has kept the divorce rate to a minimum despite having the provision of divorce in the law books like any other western country. The moral laws are enforced together by the society. Since every man wishes to be loved and respected by society, moral values are often more powerful in keeping the man on the right path than legal enforcement.
6. Spiritual Values
All values adopted by people create exclusivity in people because those values are different for every society and indeed for every person. Values are therefore the source of conflicts in the world because each person or nation strongly believes in their values as correct. However, all these values are impermanent and transient that change with time and space. The values of the current generation are not the same as the values of the previous generation.
However, there is some ingredient in all values that never changes. It has remained the same in long years of human development. These values are eternal because they never change. Therefore, often people call such values spiritual or divine because it never dies and also its origin is not known.
These are the spiritual values.
The spiritual values are often attributed to God and called divine. The spiritual values include love, compassion, justice, truth, etc. It is the nature of man to imbibe these values regardless of his religion, race, culture or nationality. These values are so universal that all people seem to understand them without being taught.
The spiritual values unite all people on this world. It is because of these spiritual values that we want justice and cannot see injustice in this world. The feelings of love and compassion cross all barriers of religion, race and nationalities. The spiritual values cannot be removed from a person and these are universal.
The Conflict of Values
No man can have only one set of values and all men are governed by the combination of all values. However, the dominant value in each person is different, which arises due to the birth in a particular family, culture, religion or nationality. The values also change with the age of the person when the same person transforms from an individual to a family man. When a man grows up and earns his living, he must work in some profession where his professional values are developed. The national values are also rooted in the person because of the common value shared by the citizens. However, as men grow older, they tend to become spiritual and develop spiritual values. Thus all six values are always prevalent in every society which keeps the society moving and unified.
