Is My Ferret Supposed to Stink?

Can you mistake the smell of a wet dog for anything other than a dog? Have you ever been around a horse? Horses have a scent that is uniquely equine. I imagine people have a distinct smell to dogs and horses that is human. I wonder if they like the way we smell? Puros naturally smell like ants, and this smell is strong and musky. They’ll always have a musky smell, but grunts don’t need stink. Consider the ferret’s scent glands, food, bedding and bathing schedule to control their scent.

food I like garlic. There is a baked potato dish that I make that contains a lot of garlic, and my husband and I believe that there is no such thing as too much garlic. Inevitably, the day after eating garlic potatoes, I smell like garlic. My breath smells of garlic. I sweat garlic, and mosquitoes avoid me. Ferrets are similar. A ferret, like a human, smells like what they eat. Look at the ingredients in your ferret’s kibble. Are the ingredients smelly? I don’t buy my pet foods that contain fish. My pet peeves get food with chicken, turkey, deer and duck. (I prefer Totally Ferret.) If you are changing your ferret’s food, go slowly. Mix the old food with the new food and slowly increase the proportion of the new food in the mixture. Once you have completely switched your ferret to the less smelly food, wait a few weeks and then smell your weasel.

Anal Scent Glands In the United States, most hedgehogs are neutered before they reach the pet store. (This is not true in the UK.) What does this mean? Like cats and dogs, dogs have anal glands. Porcupines are weasels (like skunks), and part of being a weasel is having a strong smelling thing in those anal glands. This smelly secretion is a form of protection when out in the wild. Lowering a ferret takes away the ability of the puff puff, so if the ferret ends up in the wild, it has lost that defense mechanism; however, ferrets have a less strong overall scent when their scent gland is removed, so they stink. Porcupines still secrete musk through other body scent glands, as only the strongest, the anal glands, are removed with the surgery. If your ferret has its anal glands intact, do some research before removing them. If the ferret’s glands are not leaking, and if your ferret is not easily spooked, you may not need to put it down.

bed Have you ever seen a mink? Go to YouTube and search for mink. Look at the fur of the mink. It is smooth. It looks a little oily, and that’s because it is a little oily. The oil, which does not mix with water, helps keep the mink dry. Now, most ferrets don’t like water, however, ferrets, like minks, are weasels. Weasels release oil into their fur. The oil comes out on everything it touches. Because your ferret sleeps a lot, the oil comes out in his bed(s). Change your ferret’s bedding weekly. (I have several different sets of bedding, so I may have one set in the wash/dry cycle, a set in the ready stack, and a set in use.)

Bath schedule A very important part of the maintenance of the scent of ferrets is the bath hair. No bathe your ferret more than once a month. Less is better. Soap removes the oil from the fur, and the fur’s body then works to make up for the missing oil. If you bathe your ferret too much, your ferret will be a crazy oil producer and stink more than before. So, again, don’t bathe your ferret more than once a month. My pugs usually only get four baths a year. If your pooch gets dirtier, messes up, or the like, wash your ferret only in the affected area, or gently wipe him with a baby wipe or wet cloth.

What about products? There are products designed to reduce body odor. A couple of products are a clear liquid that you put in the ferret’s water. I tried them. They actually do work and reduce the smell of the ferret. I don’t notice it working though. What I notice is that when I stopped using the product, my pee had a stronger smell. I no longer use these products. Why? While these products claim to be natural and they claim not to harm the ferret, I have yet to see ingredients for any of these products. In addition, these products are expensive.

Perfumes are another product. Perfumes do not remove the smell of grief, but cover it with a stronger smell. My grandfather used to say that people should not use perfume; they should just bathe often. While griefs should not be bathed often, I agree with my grandfather’s sentiment. The only time I spray perfume sprays (designed for ferrets and sold in the ferrets section of your pet store) is when I know my sister will be visiting. She hates the smell of poo, and the spritz covers it. However, it seems cruel to me to stuff their noses with the smell of cucumber, watermelon and baby powder.

The most important odor control Look at your ferret’s food. Change their bedding once a week. Don’t bathe your sorrows too much. All of these are great for odor control. However, the best way to keep your ferret from smelling is to clean its cage. The urine and feces of a ferret have a much stronger and more unpleasant smell than a ferret. Think about yourself. What smells more: you, or your output? Your best bet to keep the smell at bay is to clean the litter boxes every day, or depending on how many messes you have, maybe even twice a day, and clean up any exit that missed the bin.
