Why are Indian students falling over themselves to learn Vedic Mathematics? Of course, they would be proud of India’s long-standing contributions in the field of mathematics, but national pride aside, there are other subtle influences pressuring the average student to excel.
Indian parents, however, are not at all subtle about expectations for their children. Like parents everywhere, they want their children to enjoy the good life. An elite education, international travel and a modicum of security and wealth that comes from a glittering career are the stuff of new parents’ dreams. Indian parents often make educational choices for their children before they are even born. Babies don’t know what they want. Food, a dry bottom and a cuddle before bed will do it. But parents all over the world know exactly what they want for their babies.
There’s an old, and not so politically correct, saying in America about doctors, lawyers, and Indian chiefs that implies that unless you’re one of those, you’re nobody. Of course, you can’t become an Indian chief unless you’re born to it, so ditch that idea. But you can become a doctor, a lawyer — or an engineer, the career of choice in India. And that singular focus has created a hurdle that Indian students have to jump every year.

More than 150,000 aspiring engineers crack the Indian Institute of Technology entrance exam. There are 3,500 places.
And if you are one of the lucky ones, 4 years later, you return to the best seat with MBA exams. Last year, around 130,000 students vied for more than 1,300 places in the Indian Institute of Management.
A brutal statistic. Unless you’re some kind of genius. Or you have an ace hiding in your panties. And that’s where Vedic mathematics comes in.
Have you ever tried to persuade your examiner to give you an extra half hour or more to complete a stressful exam? Bet you got nowhere. What if you could sneak in that half hour without even asking? The Following Sample Illustrates the Simplicity of Vedic Math Shortcuts
Let’s find the square of any number ending in 5 using Vedic Mathematics. For example, the equation to find the square of 65 looks like this: 65×65=____.
- The answer will always end in 25. Period. So note that in the right side of your answer space like this. 65×65=__25.
- Take the first digit, in this case the number 6, and multiply it by itself plus one (6+1). So 6x(6+1, or 7)=42.
- Write 42 before the 25 in the answer space to get the complete answer of 65×65=4225. All Done!
How long do you think it would take a child to do that in their head?
The thing is, anyone who knows their tables up to 9, yes, just 9, can learn that trick in minutes and never again waste valuable test time computing the square of a number ending in 5. This is just one of many. amazingly simple techniques for computing in your head.
You Don’t Have to Be Indian for Ace Tough Entrance Exams
Now if you are American, Canadian, French or Chinese, don’t think that this skill is only for Indian students.
