Choosing the Right Baby Name For You

After the joy of finding out that you are pregnant, a woman’s mind is automatically programmed and lists are compiled of the number of things that need to be done before the arrival of the baby.

One of the things that always remains a priority on the list and inevitably never gets done until the baby is born (and even then it can still take a few days or weeks!) is naming a baby.

Choosing your baby’s name is a big responsibility for most parents and the personal nature of the task can often cause stress between parents, friends and family. We are all programmed with preconceived ideas when it comes to what a name means to each of us, and it’s amazing the images that are conjured up at the mere mention of a name.

Names associated with old school friends you’d rather forget can bring up all kinds of memories, as can the name of the boss from hell or maybe the name of your first love (who inevitably broke your heart). Let’s face it, names have so many different connotations for people that you probably won’t please everyone with your choice of your baby name.

To avoid unwanted comments about your baby names, most new parents keep them a closely guarded secret until the baby is born. Funnily enough once the baby is here, people’s opinions on baby names seem to fade as loved ones are just affected by your new baby. I say most new parents, there are of course the exceptions as I found out! I was 36 weeks pregnant when my best friend announced she was having a baby and insisted I be the first to know their choice of baby names. I begged her not to, but she insisted. I’ve heard of so many new moms being accused by friends of “stealing baby names”, I just didn’t want that to happen to me. I’m glad to say it ended well because our choice of baby names was different.

I’ve always thought that choosing baby names should be enjoyable and fun but sometimes there can be some stressful moments! Many family members may want you to choose a more traditional name that has been associated with the family for years. You, on the other hand, may have other ideas and prefer to choose a more modern baby name, or even an unusual baby name just to be different.

No matter how long it took, no matter how many bucket lists were drawn and re-drawn, no matter how many discussions took place with friends and family, you can finally look into your baby’s eyes and know that it was all worth it!
