Mandy Mac Modern Cloth Nappies
My little girl is growing now so she is moving out of diapers and into her toilet training pants. For me, it is with some sadness that I will no longer need our wonderful Mandy Mac diapers (well at least until baby number two graces us!)
You may be wondering why I am writing about modern diapers today because I used to advocate for Natural Baby Hygiene. I still think Natural Baby Hygiene is the way to go, but it also works best if you start from birth. Something I didn’t do because I didn’t find out about it until my daughter was already six months old. We are doing well together at Natural Baby Hygiene, so she is moving from full-time diapers to part-time diapers because she is already successfully using the toilet for most of her eliminations at twelve months. When baby number two graces us, I’ll be using my Mandy Mac diapers while I learn baby’s elimination signs and for outside.
So why do I think Mandy Mac’s modern diapers are the bomb?
1. The Design
They are one-size-fits-all diapers with a built-in liner to catch solid waste. Made from either a hemp/cotton blend or a bamboo/cotton blend, they are suitable for all sizes of baby from birth to conventional western toilet training. The shape is almost identical to that of a disposable diaper making it easy for people to work it out. You put the diaper on, pull the front up over baby’s crotch and secure the sides with an elastic snap clip, or with a few pins.
Another great thing about the design is that they are not waterproof. Now you might think that a diaper that needs an additional PUL cover would be more trouble than it’s worth, but it’s not. The main idea behind modern diapers is to change them when they are wet and not let your child sit around in their dirty diaper until it is “full” like you would with a disposable. If you use a modern nappy your baby will feel wet and generally sad about this feeling. He will let you know that he needs a change and this serves two big purposes. First, a modern vulva baby rarely gets a vulva rash. Its bottom is kept clean and dry and does not remain in contact with its waste. He may still get the odd teething rash but this has nothing to do with the cleanliness of his nappy. Second, you may need to train earlier because baby doesn’t like to feel wet. This helps with Natural Baby Hygiene as well as conventional western toilet training, as even when you are conventionally toilet training a baby, it is often recommended that you switch to nappy for this very reason.
Also, not using a PUL cover while you’re at home gives the fabric of the diaper more breathability, and further promotes a hygienic environment for your baby’s bottom.
However, by using a PUL cover over the Mandy Mac Diaper, you can then get out and about with confidence that your baby’s nappy won’t fill up and create a puddle where he sits until you can get to a changing room. him again. PUL is more breathable than a plastic cover.
2. The Fabrics
They are made from either a hemp/cotton blend or a bamboo/cotton blend.
Bamboo is soft, delicate and very absorbent. It is a beautiful fabric to use, and if you only have one child, this is a great option. Being highly absorbent, these diapers may take longer to dry especially if you live in a wet and cold area.
Hemp lasts well and dries faster, but can sometimes feel a bit scratchy. This isn’t actually a problem because baby’s body isn’t in contact with the hemp itself, the baby’s body is in contact with the built-in liner, so the slightly harder texture of a hemp diaper isn’t actually a problem. In addition, hemp is very durable, so according to projected usage, you may need to use the hemp if you pass them down through later children.
Mandy Mac has some fabulous overnight nappies called ‘Purple Nights’. So named because the built-in liner is a gorgeous royal purple color. They are bamboo which makes them very absorbent, and with twenty two layers of bamboo your baby can go through the night without a diaper change. Best used when baby sleeps through the night and no longer wakes up for a feed in the middle of the night. I have three. One for use, one in the wash and one on the line.
3. Ethics
Mandy Mac modern cloth diapers are not only environmentally friendly they are made under fair trade working environments. The people who make the diapers get a fair wage, great benefits for themselves and their communities in return for their work.
So how many modern diapers would you need to get started?
For a newborn baby you can expect that, until he gets into a comfortable feeding and sleeping routine, you may need about 8 to 10 diapers a day, especially if he is a breastfed baby. Don’t worry, it won’t take long for a newborn baby to settle into a routine he’s comfortable with, and you can start reducing the number of diapers needed because you can predict how often he’ll need to be changed.
For a baby 3-6 months you may need about six to eight a day.
For a baby 6 – 18 months you may need about six a day plus Purple Nights for nighttime use.
I bought 14 Mandy Macs, 3 Snappies, 3 PUL blankets and 3 Purple Nights. I also use some prefold cotton diapers in case it rained and the laundry didn’t dry in time! You can use a dryer for your modern diapers, I just choose not to for environmental reasons.
Where did I buy them from?
You can get them from Mandy Mac herself but I bought mine from a wonderful fair trade baby shop in Canberra called Brindabella Baby. Now, I don’t have any monetary affiliations with Brindabella Baby, I just think that a fair trade focused baby store is a jolly good idea and should be promoted. At the time of writing they have a six-pack of Mandy Mac Hemp for a very reasonable price and they estimate that you could save thousands of dollars by choosing modern cloth diapers over disposables for a lifetime of use. They also offer a 9-month grace period so that you can pay your investment in installments while you are pregnant.
So, Mandy Mac, they are the ones for me and my babies. What will you choose for yours?
