Exercise Epiphanies?

I’m sure you go through this thing every new year – making new resolutions to exercise.

It would be the same this year – you’ve resolved that you want to start a regular exercise program, keep fit and be healthy.

Well, we are now in the 3rd month of 2007 and you have probably already broken your New Year’s resolutions!!!

Hmmmm…. Sound familiar? And We all know how it goes……

The bottom line is this – your New Year’s resolutions are not strong enough to cause waves and seas of change in your life…….

Lasting, impactful changes must come from deep within you.

The moment you had your exercise epiphany…….

But before your epiphany, your motivation to exercise would most likely propel these 2 opposing emotions – fear and desire.

First let’s talk about fear.

You fear that your health and thus your life will deteriorate if you do nothing (in this case, exercise).

Or you fear not being able to enjoy doing what you like to do and having to depend on others when you get older – that could put you off exercising to keep you fit……

Maybe like my girlfriend (who is quite overweight) actually gets her “couch self” off the couch and exercises because she’s so afraid she might die of obesity-related complications: coronary heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke. ….

So fear has a place in motivating people to exercise.

However, for some of us, fear can fail in this terrain because we are so innate NO practice!

So there you go, back to square one.

Now let’s look at desire.

You wish to be healthy and fit; desire to have a beautiful body that can be equal to the celebrities; a desire to do things you enjoy and are able to do when you are old; desire to live healthily throughout your life…….

If you strongly, strongly crave one of these “noble” desires, then perhaps you will have the strong urge to exercise – to exercise regularly.

BUT, not many of us are born with such a lavish “envious” impulse that can help us. For many of us, that drive just isn’t there!

Okay, so what’s left to do if you still want to exercise to get healthy and stay fit?

I bring you to the point where you meet your epiphany – ie you reach a certain point in your head or even in your life and then it is true for you. CHANGE !

Lifestyle, exercise, eating habits, quit smoking, lose weight……

In a flash of a moment, when you realize that you have run out of excuses and are forced to make a decision to change.

Like a light bulb in your brain suddenly “lights up” and you see things clearly.

Or you have that “Ah Ha” moment…….

For my girlfriend, that point came when she realized she was socially “ostracized” because of her size……

For my brother, who had never exercised a day in his life, that moment came when he experienced strong heart palpitations….

My epiphany came the moment I was called “round and fat”. Then I knew I needed to be in shape, very much so…. I was 20 years old then.

I started my exercise training program, starting with toning and sculpting my troublesome areas – butt, thighs, arms, abs and legs, cutting sugary and fatty things in my food, to toning the whole body, cardio, stretching, strength training and Pilates. .

I have been exercising ever since and have been able to keep calm and healthy with little fuss.

This is the so-called epiphany, that moment of strong inspiration that leaves an impression on your mind and life that will not budge – that you must do something to change your situation for the better.

However, that moment of intense, burning inspiration may not happen again anytime soon and some of us may not get it when it does!

“What good is an epiphany if I can’t get it? I’d still occasionally fall off the exercise wagon and break my resolve to exercise!”

You ask.

That’s right. You caught the drift…..

See, not all of us would get that moment of epiphany. If you get it, so much the better for you.

What I’m trying to say is this – why wait for it to happen to motivate you to exercise?

Get started now!

You just need to take one small, baby step, one at a time.

Start cardio for 5 minutes, then 10 minutes, 20 minutes, 30 minutes… as you build up endurance along the way.

Gradually add strength training, stretching, Pilates/Yoga.

Get into healthy eating when you’re ready for it….

Thus, you will be able to cope well with the small changes and not suddenly overwhelmed by “seas” of changes that

you can’t handle…..and you give up!

One thing that is very helpful in helping you start exercising is this-

Clear all the things that tend to hold you back – excuses, all kinds of commitments, wrong attitude (laziness, lukewarmness, procrastination) and wrong perception about exercise, among others.

Unencumbered by these things, you will get a new, fresh start and practice constantly. You won’t fall off the exercise wagon easily!

One more thing – when you see results, I’m pretty sure that’s your exercise epiphany!

The results won’t lie. They are the best testaments to your exercise effort and your deepest, unchained motivation that is anchored within you!

You finally arrested your wobble.

You will exercise regularly.
