Baby Development at 6 Months: From the First to The Fourth Week

So now your baby is 6 months old, and you might notice a lot of changes. As a mother, it is essential to note the stages of your baby’s development every month. What is your baby’s development when he is 6 months old? Below are the baby’s developments during his sixth month that you should notice:

Week 1

At this stage, a 6-month-old baby begins to roll to one side. It’s a fun thing for your baby even though sometimes it can be nerve-wracking for you. When your baby starts learning how to roll over, make sure you always pay attention to his movements. Do not let him lie on the bed without your control. Another development that a baby makes when he is six months old is that he begins to tolerate attention from others. He will also do anything to provoke your reaction. At this stage, he will not only try to get your reaction by crying, but also by waving or making noise. Your baby will be more active at this stage; therefore, comfortable clothes are needed to support his movements. Breathable clothing is recommended because it provides more comfort for your loved one.

Week 2

In the 2nd week, babies begin to learn sign language. Often, babies develop their motor skills faster than their speech skills. Before they can say a few short words like “goodbye,” babies have usually discovered how to wave or point. To teach your baby about sign language, try using hand signals. For example, you can put your fingers on your lips when you want to say “hungry”. Teaching your baby sign language is essential because it helps him develop his language skills.

Playing turn games is another activity you can teach your baby. Games that involve sounds and language are babies’ favorite. You can make animal noises to entertain your baby or splash the water in the bathtub to create fun sounds.

Week 3

When your baby reaches the third week in his sixth month, he begins to use all his senses. He will love to gnaw on a teether or hear a bell on his toy. This stage is also the right time to introduce him to books. Books help your baby improve his language skills and promote a reading hobby. You can choose books with pop-up pictures or the colorful board books to attract your baby. By 9 or 12 months, your baby won’t be patient enough to hear you read the story. However, do not give up and keep this good habit.

Week 4

In the fourth week, your baby will love to bounce. Jumping helps your baby strengthen his muscles, so now you can help him stand on the floor by holding his arms. Another milestone you will find is that your baby will start to grasp things with one hand. It is important to always improve your baby’s motor skills. You can place a toy at a certain distance and let him grab it. If he can’t reach the toy, encourage him to grab it so his confidence grows.

These are the common developmental guidelines in a 6 month old baby. If your baby is six months old and he hasn’t shown the above signs, he may need more time to develop. A baby is an individual and they have their own rhythm.
