Child Communication Development

Children’s communication is one of the systems that develop from the moment they are born. It is part of human nature to communicate with other people and babies start right away with cries or gurgles as they tell you what is wrong or right. However, very soon their brain starts to make sense of speech patterns when adults talk to them. The neat thing is that adults change their way of speaking when communicating with a baby and speak in a sing-song tone using simple sounds and repeating what they have said a lot. This helps the baby’s brain begin to sort out the units of sounds they hear – which are actually words.

As the speech and communication centers in their brains develop even more, babies begin to make sounds that approximate the words they hear. Mom, Dada are classic examples of this. Even more amazing is the fact that babies can actually understand words long before they can say them and a toddler can easily have a working vocabulary of over 100 words without being able to say one of them! This led to the development of ‘Signing’ with young babies to have a real conversation with them as early as 8/9 months. This has taught us a lot about the development of a child’s understanding and the fascinating news is that babies really understand a lot of what is going on even if they don’t comment on it verbally.

However, on with the story of communication development. Once the stage of talking and echoing the sounds they hear is over the stage of actually using words arrives and at this exciting stage children bring together the understanding they have developed of what the sounds mean and begins to exchange opinions with you. There are two important parts to their understanding and communication – one is about them responding to you and what you say. This is externally focused understanding and second is them understanding and communicating what is happening within them. This is an internally focused understanding. Because many of their childhood children are much more externally focused and only focus internally when they are uncomfortable in some way and then try to communicate that. Now their task is more subtle and for that they need your help. They have to start making sense out of their inner feelings and moods just like everything else. They must begin to integrate their emotional systems with their cognitive systems and then make decisions about what they are communicating.

This is far from just yelling or slapping or laughing or crying as a knee-jerk reaction to inner experiences. These early responses were not mediated by the cognitive systems very much. Now is the time when they all start working together, but to do it well, they need some training from you. You need to show them how to figure out what they are feeling, giving them a rich vocabulary to describe their “insides”. This means you must have this and use the vocabulary as well. You should also help them slow down a bit as they answer and take a minute or two to think of other ways to answer. You help them connect emotions to thought to action. It is not surprising that children take time to stop having emotional planes when they react strongly to something. However, this is a lesson and a bit of brain development that will stand them in good stead for the rest of their lives. Emotional and social competence is essential for successful communication.

Having reached this point, they can refine their communication more and more by learning more descriptive language, learning to write, learning other languages, learning to speak in different ways that will get positive attention and influence people. the basic “brain-shaping” has been done and now what remains is to polish, augment and refine the neural circuits as they become more embedded in the intricacies of the brain as a whole. We will be writing more about the emotional and social training processes so please stay tuned for future articles.
