My First Mother’s Day Gift

My first Mother’s Day gift was the birth of my baby boy, Zachary. He was scheduled to be born on mother’s day last year but chose to come out earlier. Zachary was born on 04-25-2005, exactly two weeks before Mother’s Day.

My whole family was happy for the birth of Zachary. He weighed 2.98 kg and I thank God for the smooth delivery and for protecting him inside my womb because the umbilical cord was around his neck when he was born. Thank God Zachary was born early in my 38 weeks of pregnancy because the umbilical cord was loose around his neck.

Unfortunately, Zachary had jaundice. In addition to the photo-light therapy, the nurses took a blood sample every day to check for his jaundice. It was painful to see the baby cry every time they took his blood sample.

On the 8th day of birth, my husband and I decided to consult another Pediatrician to make sure that our child was fine, because we were not comfortable with the first Pediatrician we consulted, who was arranged by the hospital on the day of his birth

Everything looks good according to the 2nd Pediatrician and no concern about the jaundice level. However, the latest news came when our baby was diagnosed by Dr. Lim, the second Pediatrician we consulted, who is also a Pediatric Cardiologist, for having a single large perimembranous entrance Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD) and a small secundum Atrial Septal Defect ( ASD). ) (commonly known as holes in the heart). In fact, the Pediatric Cardiologist was surprised to find 2 holes in the heart because my baby is not showing any symptoms. The holes were only detected by ultrasound scanning.

Both my husband and I were very shocked by the news. We couldn’t believe this was happening to us. We consulted other specialists but the end result was the same.

Under the treatment of Dr. Lim, Zachary was given 6 months as a monitoring period. If the two holes in his heart showed no sign of closing on their own, he would have to undergo surgery to patch the two holes. Meanwhile, Zachary was given 2 types of medication to be taken twice a day ie Lasix and KCL to reduce the burden on the heart as he grows.

My husband and I prayed very hard every day for miracles so that our baby would not have to undergo a surgical operation.

It was not a pleasant experience feeding a baby with medicine especially Lasix and KCL. Both medicines were not tasty, but it is necessary according to the doctor. As a result, my baby developed nausea. He was seen to have nausea several times a day.

Unfortunately in his 3rd month of birth, Zachary suffered from fever for more than 2 weeks. The strange thing was that he only had a fever from about 2 to 7 in the morning every day. He would cry and cry for no reason during these hours and none of us can explain what is happening.

Zachary was admitted to the hospital twice over this issue in July 2005. He seemed fine in the hospital but when he came home, the same thing happened again.

A full check on Zachary was done. The Pediatric Cardiologist ruled out all possibilities of the reasons for such a fever. Finally, he informed that the only explanation was due to the symptom of heart failure.

We were really sad, scared and worried when we heard such news. With no choice, my 3 month old baby was scheduled to undergo a surgical operation on 08-08-2005 to close both the VSD and ASD.

The most difficult moment I can ever remember was handing my baby into the hands of the Anesthetist, who would then send him into the operating theatre. Tears flowed down our face automatically and our hearts beat very fast… We were just scared… Deep in our hearts we prayed for our baby, the Anesthesiologist (Dr. Tang) and the Surgeon (Dr. Lee). We prayed for the Lord’s protection and control over the smooth running of the operation.

The operation lasted 2 hours. Thank God it works well. He was then placed in the ICU (Intensive Care Unit) for 3 days, and then in the HDU (High Dependency Unit) for a day and 3 days in the normal ward. The total cost we spent amounted to RM26,000 of our currency for this operation and the stay in the hospital. This however excludes the following costs and other costs that we have previously incurred.

During the first day in ICU, it was really sad to see so many tubes surrounding his little body. Zachary’s condition was unstable then because he had a fever. The surgeon ordered his temperature lowered. Therefore, Zachary was not on clothes. He was wearing only a diaper. The air conditioner was right above him and a fan was blowing directly at him. He was also on a wet cloth to lower his temperature.

Time passed. Zachary just turned one on 04-25-2006. He is such a lovely baby. He sleeps well at night, he smiles when he sees us, he is now able to call us “daddy” “mommy”. We are happy and grateful to those who prayed for us and extended their helping hands in any way (ie our priests, friends and family members). I thank God for them and God bless them many folds.

For those who read this message, God bless you too. Treasure your family and show your love and care for them while they are still around.

For those going through a similar situation, don’t be discouraged. Be strong. Have faith. Although it was a dark valley we passed through, please remember that there are always mountains.

As mother’s day is near, I wish all mothers a happy mother’s day!
