Infant Bronchitis – Everything Parents Need To Know
Parents can sacrifice their whole lives for children. When their child is sick, how can they have a good sleep?
When the child constantly coughs and breathes hard, you may think that this is not an ordinary cough or cold. Well, check with your pediatrician because your baby might be suffering from Bronchitis.
Bronchitis often occurs in adults. In this disorder the large airways in our body become inflamed. Bronchitis refers to babies with their airways becoming inflamed between their chest and lungs. This expression is invented from the word bronchioles, a part of the bronchi of the babies that is naturally smaller than that of an adult. Therefore, the infections in this case are easily blocked and viruses enter very easily.
When is your child at risk?
1. At the age of 6 months, the baby becomes prone to developing bronchitis. Until the baby turns 2 years old, this tendency is much too much.
2. The babies are quite more sensitive to this disease during the winters and the early period of the spring season.
3. The babies exposed to cigarettes and belched smoke also have a high risk of catching the aforementioned disease.
4. For babies, even the crowded environments cause the symptoms of bronchitis.
5. Male babies have a higher risk of getting bronchitis than the females.
6. During the first 6 months, the male babies who are fed with formula become more likely to get this disease compared to those who are breastfed.
What are the causes of bronchitis?
Respiratory Syncytial Virus or RSV is the main cause of bronchitis among babies. The researchers demonstrated that RSV causes serious illnesses among young children, mostly infants.
The other viruses that lead to bronchitis are as follows:
1. Parainfluenza Virus
This type of virus most often causes children’s respiratory infections in babies.
2. Mycoplasma
This type of virus is a major cause of pneumonia and several other disorders related to the respiratory system.
3. Adenoviruses
This virus often causes diseases such as conjunctivitis and several others related to the respiratory system.
4. Influenza Virus
This type of virus enters the respiratory tract of the human body and leads to the individuals suffering with cold, cough and some bronchitis.
What are the symptoms?
1. The baby begins to have a runny and stuffy nose along with a mild cough. This is the key symptom of bronchitis among babies.
2. Later the child would suffer from various breathing difficulties, that is both in the inhalation and exhalation part.
3. Only in a day or 2, the baby would have increased breathing difficulty along with rapid wheezing & coughing. By this time, you must become conscious, because the heartbeats would become very unusually fast.
4. While all the above symptoms are necessary, they are often accompanied with the others such as fever and/or cooler body temperature & reduced appetite.
How can medical experts diagnose bronchitis?
If you observe the symptoms given above in your baby, you should check with a pediatrician as soon as possible. The pediatrician would first check the baby’s medical history and then evaluate the baby with some physical examination. Further, the doctor ordered some more tests, which should be taken very seriously. These tests are as follows:
1. Pulse oximeter
2. Radiographic chest
What are the recommended treatments?
1. The child can be temporarily relieved by first aid.
2. Next you need to give your child plenty of non-caffeinated fluids. This would check the dehydration in the child.
3. You can choose to use the moisturizers and/or saline nose drops. These would help slime to lighten very quickly.
4. Sometimes, the medical experts recommend that the parents and/or caregivers take their baby to the hospital to get them well-monitored care such as giving the fluids and oxygen as needed and giving the right humidified atmosphere. One very important thing in this case would be that the child would receive proper medical care.
Is bronchitis preventable?
Once your child is saved from a bronchitis attack, you should not risk him/her with another episode of the disease. So, you must take the following preventive measures:
1. During the casual seasons for the baby such as winters and early spring season, be sure to keep your child away from people suffering from cough, cold and flu.
2. Make sure that as a parent and/or caregiver, you must wash your hands every time before handling the baby.
3. If you cough or sneeze, you must use a tissue or handkerchief to cover your mouth well enough.
If you are likely to get sick, ask someone to take over your responsibility for a few days.
